The doctor looked surprised, and Belle looked understanding. That just pissed me off even more.

“You crashed into a tree,” the doctor said. “The impact knocked you out, but your vitals are fine. I stitched up your forehead.”

I reached up and found the bandage on my forehead. There was also pain on the bridge of my nose, and I found a small cut there too.

“You’ve got a mild concussion, so you just need to take it easy for the next week. If you can, try to stay in bed.”

Stay in bed? For a week?

That would be a nightmare.

“It’s just a cut,” I said. “I’m sure it’s not a big deal.”

“Did you go to medical school?” the doctor asked, arching an eyebrow. I glared at him, although I had a grudging respect for him. “Head injuries are serious, even minor ones. Moving around too much isn’t recommended.”

I hated this. I despised feeling weak, and people feeling sorry for me made my skin crawl. I gritted my teeth together.

At my side, Belle reached over to check the bandage on my forehead. I grabbed her wrist, squeezing it in warning. I didn’t want to be touched.

“Did you test Belle?” I asked the doctor.

“What are you talking about?” she asked, pulling her wrist free from my grasp.

I kept talking to the doctor, ignoring her. “I need to know she’s not carrying any diseases before I stick my dick in her to breed her.”

There was a moment of silence. Both men stared at me with disapproval while Belle stood with her mouth open in shock. Then she spun on her heel and stormed out.

I knew my words had a profound impact on her when she left the room without arguing. Though I wasn’t proud of myself, I had to distance myself from her. I felt weak, exposed, and vulnerable.

She couldn’t be around for that. It would be too easy for her to worm her way into my blackened heart. She was already chipping away at my shield, and I couldn’t seem to stop it, no matter what I did. If being a dick to her was the only way to keep her at arm’s length, then it was what I would do.

Chapter9

Belle

Istood in the kitchen, picking at the bandage on my arm from where the doctor drew blood this morning. I knew it would be good for me to know the results, too. After all, I’ve had a lot of unprotected sex against my will. But why did he have to be such a crude asshole about it? It was as if he was trying to embarrass me in front of the men in the room or make me angry with him.

It was like he was trying to hurt me, and he succeeded.

“Here you go, dear,” the maid said as she handed over the tray of food for Sebastian.

Was I an idiot for caring enough to bring him dinner?

Probably.

But I couldn’t seem to get rid of this fascination with him. I couldn’t seem to stop caring about the jerk.

So, I went to his room with a tray of soup, crackers, and pie. A peace offering. If only he’d take it.

He glowered at me when I walked in with the tray. I tried to send him a smile, but it probably looked as forced as it felt.

“I figured you’d be hungry,” I said, placing the tray on his nightstand.

“I have staff for that,” he said.

You’re welcome, dickhead.

I took a deep breath and gathered every ounce of my patience.
