Still, one guy got mad and shoved her forward. I winced as she fell hard on the concrete, my hands going to my bump. If I landed on my bump like that, would the babies even make it?

“Get up, bitch,” one man snarled, yanking her to her feet. Then, they were gone, leaving me in silence.

I tried to shove my fear for the babies to the back of my mind and focus on a solution. I didn’t have time to wait for an opportunity like I did before. I had to make one. Searching the floor around the mattress, I looked for anything I could use as a weapon.

There were old screws, used drug needles, and leftover handmade knives, probably used by previous girls unsuccessfully. Nothing I could really use.

As I returned to the lumpy mattress, my eyes fell on a tiny hole in the fabric. It was a spring mattress, and I plunged my hands inside, slicing my finger on a jagged piece of metal that had come loose. Although it was sharp, I doubted it would aid in my escape, but I still kept it beside me on the bed, just in case I needed to defend myself. I rose to my feet and paced around the cramped enclosure, but stopped when the babies stirred. I didn’t want to draw any unwanted attention to my bump, so I paused and waited for them to settle down.

A while later, the door opened again, and they came for me this time. I gripped the spring as they approached the cage, and the one that tried to assault me earlier pulled out a switchblade as he eyed my hand.

I sighed and released my pathetic weapon.Knife trumped mattress spring.

I rose to my feet and followed them out through the door, mindful of the fact that any resistance on my part would only result in further harm. They escorted me down a brief corridor and into a different room, which, thankfully, was not as squalid as the previous one. Although the lighting was dim, it was still an improvement, and the atmosphere seemed somewhat less oppressive.

I hesitated for a moment too long, taking in my surroundings, before I was jolted forward by one of the men. He let out an exasperated grunt, clearly annoyed by my sluggishness. I landed on the floor with a thud, feeling the sting of scraping my hands and knees but protecting my baby bump. The door shut behind me, and I got to my feet, determined to find a way out, but before I got a chance, the door opened again. I turned toward it, bracing myself to deal with the same assholes that brought me in here, but the man I’d escaped from me stood in the doorway instead.

I didn’t get a great look at him before, but I still recognized him. My heart dropped. He’d bought girls from auctions before, and he was merciless. He was also hideous. A true monster.

Fear gnawed at me as he approached, and my anxiety skyrocketed when he retrieved a folded chair from the corner and took a seat.

My skin crawled as his eyes roamed over me, lingering on my belly, causing my chest to stutter. He didn’t even blink, but revealed a sinister grin revolting enough to make a shiver skip down my spine. He held up a finger and extracted a sharp blade from his pocket. And my heart sank even further.

“What are you going to do with that?” I asked, my voice shaky. I took a clumsy step backward until my back hit a wall. There was nowhere to run.

He stood. “How do you want to die? Because no one runs from me. I paid good money for you, and now you’re fucking useless.” He scanned my bump and then my face.

He stalked forward. The flicker of hope I held onto died. My heart sank as he drew within a couple of feet, and I braced myself for the worst. However, just as he was about to make his move, the door to the room suddenly burst open. To say that I was surprised would be an understatement, as I watched Fiona charge inside.

We both froze in place as my sister’s eyes met mine. I forgot how to breathe, and a small part of me thought I might be hallucinating. Then Fiona ran toward me, only to be knocked to the ground by the monster between us. I gasped as she fell hard, and the asshole kicked her in the gut again and again. I screamed and Fiona tried to roll away, but none of it did any good. He didn’t stop until she wasn’t moving.

My heart shattered as I knelt beside her, but the man followed, placing his knife against my belly.

“Please,” I begged, all fight leaving me. I hated begging like this, but I’d do anything for my children. “Please don’t kill me. Just let me go. I’ll pay you back what you spent on me, I swear.”

He persisted as the blade pressed harder against my belly, nearly piercing my skin. To make matters worse, he stuck his tongue out and ran it along the side of my face. The revulsion was overwhelming, but I kept still, fervently praying for the safety of my unborn children.

“What a waste you are,” he murmured. “I bet you would have been a good fuck in the ass.”

The man’s phone rang, and he took the call, speaking in another language as he talked to whoever had just bought me a little time. He didn’t move away, but he didn’t press the knife in harder either.

I looked down at Fiona, a sharp pain in my heart as I took in her appearance. She was stick thin, with dark circles under her closed eyes. She looked completely worn out but was a sight for sore eyes. Her hair was dirty and matted, and her clothes were in tatters. Most of her body was covered in cuts and bruises. It was horrible, but when our eyes met moments ago, I could have sworn that I saw a flicker of hope still burning there.

No matter what, I couldn’t leave this horrible place without her.

But why was she here now? They’d kept us separated for so long, and I suspected they did it on purpose to break us both down. It was easier to crush someone’s spirit when they had nothing left to hope for. Nothing and no one to give them strength to stay strong and fight.

I didn’t realize the man had hung up the phone until his knife moved to my neck. I pulled in a sharp breath and looked at him. There was cold determination in his eyes.

“Sir, we have a problem.”

The door had opened yet again, and I saw that there were two men in the doorway. The man cursed under his breath and stood.

“Fine. You stay with them,” he said, pointing a meaty finger at one of the men. “Watch that one. She’s a troublemaker. Shoot her if she tries to run, but don’t shoot her whore sister. I want to feel her cunt first. If it’s good, maybe I’ll keep her as a pet. If not, I’ll slit her throat.”

His smile was pure evil.

I remained watchful as the man departed, leaving only our guard behind. With caution, I observed as he approached, pulling out a Glock and then kneeling in front of me. As he pressed the firearm against my forehead, I went rigid, not daring to move a muscle.
