Page 10 of Love Like Mine

“Don’t I fucking know it,” I say, letting out a long sigh. I haven’t let myself think about it too much before now because it’s a big fucking drag, but what I do know is that I’ll do whatever it takes to win her over.

“What are you going to do about that?” Ez asks.

“Fight her for her,” I say simply. I know she’ll fight me at every turn because she thinks it’s what she has to do.

“How the hell are you planning on doing that?” Asher asks.

“Show her that she belongs to me,” I say.

“Obviously she’ll disagree with that,” he says with an eyebrow raised.

“Don’t care. She’s mine and I’m never letting her go now that I’ve realized that I love her,” I growl.

“Whoa, calm down there, tiger!” Ez snorts. “We’re just trying to help you figure out what you’re going to do since you know, you didn’t listen to us before,” he throws in.

“It’s like he wants to get his ass kicked,” I grumble out loud.

“My face is too pretty,” he pouts.

“I’ll help,” Axel says with a laugh.

“Bite me, dickhead!” Ez mumbles back at him.

We’re spared from further quarreling between the two of them when I pull into White Ridge High’s parking lot. We stay in the car and just shoot the shit until we see the bus with the coach and the rest of the players pull into the parking lot about half an hour later.

We get out and head for the rest of the team. When Coach sees us, he tells everyone we can do whatever we want until the game is ready to start but to not get into any trouble. We still have a few hours until the game starts.

The guys and I head for the school’s bleachers to relax and do nothing until we’re ready. Coach never lets us practice on game day because according to him, if you have to then you’re not ready to be playing at all. The only thing we really do are warm-ups and stretches.

He’d rather have us well rested and ready to give it our all during the actual game and I have to say I like that. The place is buzzing with energy, everyone getting ready for the game and the atmosphere calms me down a little. This is what I love about football. It’s the one thing that makes my world feel right and I’m less on edge because I focus on the game ahead.

We might not physically practice on game day but that doesn’t mean I don’t run through plays and strategies in my head on my own time. Everyone on my team can hold their own but they look to me for guidance and expect me to help them bring in the win for our team and our school.

I’ve never had a problem with that before because the game is what I live and breathe for. Now, I have something else that’s priceless to me. With thoughts of her in my mind, when we get to the bleachers and all sit down, I pull my phone out to text her.

Knox

Hey, baby, what are you up to?

Raine

Still in the library, working on my paper. So, if you could leave me alone that would be great!

Knox

Cute but no can do. I miss you already ?

Raine

The only thing you probably miss is not making my life a living hell anymore. Then again, you could be lying. You’re probably already planning something else for me, hoping that I’ll be the stupid girl who believes you.

Knox

Fuck, baby! I told you this isn’t a game anymore. You’re mine and I mean every. Single. Word!

Raine

Whatever, Knox. I’m tired but I can’t leave until I finish my paper, so talk to you later… or not. It doesn’t really matter.
