“Thanks, Coach. We’ll follow,” I tell him and he nods.

“I’ve already called his parents and they’re on their way,” he informs me. I’m glad that at least one of us is thinking straight because clearly, I’m not. I nod and then run after the guys. We hop into my car. As soon as we pull out of the parking lot, the ambulance is passing us on the street. Thank God, I made the decision to drive before we left Riverside.

Not even thinking about anything else besides following it, I step on the gas and follow close behind it the entire way to the hospital. I park the car in the parking lot and then the three of us jump out and rush right into the emergency room.

I give all the necessary information but the nurse says she can’t give out details and all this bullshit that gets me pissed as fuck, but I keep my cool. I tell her that his parents are on the way and if she could direct us to the nearest waiting room that would at least be helpful.

I don’t care that my tone comes off rude but who the hell cares right now? Our best friend’s life might be in danger and she’s worried about policies and bullshit. I walk away when I have the directions and we all move there and sit and play the waiting game.

I’m too agitated to sit still so I pace the room a little. When that doesn’t ease my worry, I grab my phone and text Raine.

Knox

Hey, baby. I’m sorry I’ll be home late. I really wanted to come straight to you but something happened with Ez and we’re at the hospital with him.

I hit send and then wait for her to respond. I look at the time and see that it’s close to ten p.m. already. She better not be ignoring me still. Just to make sure, I text her again.

Knox

Baby? Where the hell are you?

Knox

You better not be ignoring me or I’ll tan your fucking ass!

Knox

Raine!!!

When she still doesn’t respond, I call her. Her phone goes straight to voicemail. The instant worry I had earlier when it came to her resurfaces and I’m on edge again. I’m sure she’s fine and in her bed sleeping and not at all ignoring me right now.

Yes, that’s exactly what she’s doing. I let out a groan because I can’t do anything right now. I can’t leave Ez here like this and I can’t be there with her right now either. I guess I’ll just have to wait until I get home to speak with her. Fucking hell, could this day get any worse?!

“What’s wrong?” Ash asks as he watches me from the chair, he’s sitting in. I look over at Axel next and he’s unusually quiet. He looks like he’s deep in thought. Whatever he’s thinking about has a grimace crossing his face.

I leave him be for now because he’s as much a stubborn fucker as the rest of us and won’t talk unless he wants to.

“Raine isn’t answering any of her texts or my calls. It keeps going straight to voicemail,” I say, sounding like a total sap.

“Maybe she’s just home and sleeping already. You did say that she had that paper to write and it’s due tomorrow. Maybe it just tired her out,” he says, making perfect sense.

“You’re right. I’m probably just overreacting for nothing,” I say as I take my seat next to him. We sit there and continue to wait.

An hour later, Ez’s parents show up and his dad goes straight to the doctor while his mom stays here with us. I see them talking in hushed tones but I can’t make out what they’re saying. When his dad finally makes it back over to us, he looks at the three of us before speaking.

“You guys should go on home. You must be tired after the game. We’ll call as soon as we hear anything and give you the updates,” he says. Ash and I both nod and get up to go. There’s not much we can do here, anyway.

“I’m not leaving until he’s going with us,” Ax says to Ez’s parents.

“We figured as much,” Ez’s dad says with a sigh, they both nod and then we give him a nod as well. He knows it means to call us with any updates. Ez’s parents expected this because they didn’t even argue. I guess it’s because the two of them have been best friends all their lives, so they know what to expect with those two.

We bid them goodbye before Ash and I head out the door. I would have stayed my ass right there too but I need to see Raine and make sure she’s fine, with my own two eyes. Plus, it’s been too long since I’ve been without her and I need to rectify that.

I gunned it all the way back to Riverside and dropped Ash off before making my way home. As soon as I step through the doors, I rush up the stairs and straight into Raine’s room. My heart skips a beat when I see that she’s not in here and her room is tidy. Her bed is made like she hasn’t even slept in it.

I rush to my room, hoping that maybe she missed me and slept in my bed instead of hers but my heart sinks even further when I see that my bed is empty as well.
