“Why? It’s not like I’m going to steal shit. Unfortunately, I live here too!” I snap at him.

“That’s not the reason and you know it. Don’t be obtuse,” he says as he pushes me toward the table in the kitchen. He pulls the chair out for me and motions for me to sit before he moves toward the stove.

“What do you need, sir? I can make breakfast for the two of you,” one of the maids say, coming out of nowhere.

“It’s fine. I’ll make it. You can have some downtime,” he says, and she thanks him before disappearing as fast as she appeared.

“How nice of you. Didn’t think you had it in you to be nice to the staff,” I say sarcastically, and it isn’t lost on him but he doesn’t take the bait.

“What do you want for breakfast?” he asks instead.

“Not—” I start but he cuts me off.

“So, help me God, if you say nothing, I’ll spank your ass for being a pain in mine!” he grumbles.

“Geez. What crawled up your ass?”

“You did apparently.” He sighs.

“Well, I wasn’t the one who asked you to be here, you know? I’m perfectly capable of being here on my own,”

“Toast and eggs it is. I’m not fucking fighting with you again since that’s all you seem to want to do when it comes to us,” he grumbles. Guess he’s really upset.

“There is no us,” I reply automatically. He doesn’t reply. He bangs pans as he begins making us breakfast. If this wasn’t about us, I’d be laughing about the absurdity of it all. Too bad it is about us and pissing him off is my new favorite thing to do.

I don’t say anything else to him. I just let him do what he’s doing and stare out the glass door that leads to the backyard. The television in the kitchen adds to the background noise along with him moving around.

A moment later, I hear my phone begin to vibrate on the kitchen table. When I look at it, I see that it’s my mother. I debate not answering but I’ve already avoided some of her calls.

“Hey, Mom!” I say with what I hope is a happy and bright voice.

“Hey, honey! How are you? I miss you,” she says.

“I’m good. Everything is great and I miss you too. How’s the vacation going?”

“It’s going amazing so far! I definitely needed this. How’s Knox treating you? Are you guys getting along?” she questions. I look up at him to see that he’s already looking at me.Man, he looks hot in just sweatpants and no freaking shirt on.

Mom calls my name and I realize I spaced out for a second while staring at him. He definitely didn’t miss it if his smirk is anything to go by.

“Oh, he’s been great. Like the brother I’ve always wanted,” I say with heavy sarcasm. My mother doesn’t get it since all she does is gush over the phone.

“I’m really happy to hear that, baby!” she says, sounding happy.

We talk for a little while longer before hanging up. I didn’t ask her when she was coming back and she didn’t say either.

A moment later, my phone rings again. and I think it’s her calling back. When I look at the phone, I see that it’s Aiden calling. Shit! I haven’t spoken to him in ages.

“Hey, boo!” I answer happily. I look up and my eyes clash with Knox’s. He has his narrowed at my excited tone.

“Hey, bestie! What’s going on with you? I haven’t heard from you in ages!” he says in what definitely sounds like a scolding tone.

“I’m sorry. Things got a little hectic for a while. How are you? I miss you,”

“We definitely need to catch up soon. I miss you too. Sayl has been asking for you, too.”

“Aww. Tell her I miss her. We’ll definitely hang out soon once I’m out of house arrest,” I say sarcastically, and he laughs.

“That bad, huh?”
