“Tired,” he admits. “But it’s a good kind of tired. I’m sorry Dad kept telling you about all my embarrassing childhood mishaps.”

“Are you kidding? I would’ve kept him here forever if it meant I could get more stories. Did you really shove a whole crayon up your nose?”

Dimitri grimaces. “Please let it go. I wasthree. I swear I grew up to be much more dignified.”

“Oh, definitely,” I tease him. “But at least tell me what color it was.”

“Why?”

“I like my stories to have lots of details, okay? I’m a visual thinker.”

He chuckles, wrapping an arm around me. “Maybe, if you’re good.”

“Green?”

“No.”

“Blue?”

“Seriously, Nat, I’m not telling.”

“Maybe I’ll just call Mikhail. I’m sure he’ll tell me.”

“Please don’t.”

I kiss Simon’s little cheek as we make our way up the stairs to his room. “What do you think, sweetie? Maybe it was yellow?”

“Ye-woe,” he echoes.

Dimitri and I both break out into laughter. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how adorable my son can be.

Chapter Forty- Seven

Natalya

“Shall we begin?” the doctor asks me. There’s something a little impatient in her tone, but I ignore it. I, too, am growing restless.

“Can we wait just a little bit longer?” I ask. “He said he’d be here. I don’t want him to miss this.”

I smile sweetly, hoping it will help soften her mood. I’m sure she’s got a long list of patients to see, but this is something I absolutely can’t budge on. I’m well overdue for this ultrasound, and as a doctor it’s been driving me insane. But Russian healthcare is a waiting game at best. And since it’s my first, I really want Dimitri to be here for it. Obviously, it would have been better to book this checkup several weeks ago, but with everything that’s happened, it was hard to find the timeanda doctor Dimitri vetted thoroughly enough to trust me in their care.

“Very well,” the doctor says with a sigh. “I’ll just be—”

“I’m here!” Dimitri exclaims, practically tumbling into the examination room. He’s out of breath, hair windswept.

I can’t help but laugh. “Did you run here?”

“Yeah, sorry. Meeting ran late and traffic was awful.”

I shoot him a pointed look. “You promised, Dima. Today of all days…”

“No, I know,” he says with an apologetic smile. He hurries over to join me, kissing me sweetly on the temple. “I’m sorry, angel. I promise, it won’t happen again.”

“It better not, mister.”

The doctor clears her throat. “Shall we begin?”

Dimitri and I both nod enthusiastically. We’ve been looking forward to this all week.
