“Nat?” Dahlia calls from the hallway. “I just wanted to check on you. Are you alright? Such frightening news, this shooting. I can hardly imagine!”

Dimitri makes no effort to stop. Instead, he doubles down, working me with his fingers and tongue with twice the effort. I have to bite down on my tongue to keep from screaming. Dahlia is expecting an answer. I can’t not respond because she knows I’m in my room. If I’m silent, she might grow concerned and try to come in.

“I’m… I’m alright,” I croak. “Just a little tired.”

“Can I get you anything?”

Dimitri adds another finger, the delicious burn knocking me off kilter. I slap him gently on the shoulder.

“No, that’s alright. I think I just need some—ah—quiet time to wind down.”

“I understand. I’m really glad you and Mr. Antonov are safe. Sleep well, dear.”

Even when I hear her footsteps retreat down the hall, I can’t relax. Not when I’mthisclose to coming.

“Dimitri,” I whine. “Dimitri, ohfuck I’m going to—”

Euphoria.

It hits me hard and fast, an explosion of ecstasy like fireworks crackling through my entire body. I can no longer tell up from down. All I know is I need to feel Dimitri’s lips, need to be wrapped in his arms. I reach out blindly, mind spinning in delirium.

Unfortunately, Dimitri seems to have other plans. He rises to his feet, doing up the buttons of his shirt as he licks his mouth. “I think that’s enough for today.”

I prop myself up on my elbows, staring at him in shock. “What?”

“We’re playing a dangerous game, Nat. The guest room isn’t exactly soundproof. Not ideal for discretion.”

My face flushes with heat. I hate that he makes sense, but I also hate that things have to end this way. Why am I letting myself get upset about this? It’s agoodthing. Now that my mind is clear, I finally understand the gravity of the situation I’m in. Was I really going to sleep with the man who killed my father? Where the hell did all my self-control go?

Dimitri redresses, but he doesn’t leave without giving me a tender kiss on the lips. “Another time,” he promises.

“Right,” I reply, trying to play it cool.

When the door closes behind him, I feel thoroughly disappointed.

Chapter 14

Natalya

Ireach for my phone and send Edvard a text.

It was you, wasn’t it? You sent those gunmen after us.

You’re taking too long. I thought I would give you a helping hand.

I’m seething. The second we were under attack, I knew exactly who was responsible. My fury knows no bounds.

THEY SHOT ME! Not Dimitri, me!!

You have my sincerest apologies, Nat. I swear that was not the goal and I will be sure to have a word with my men. Although this could prove helpful to you.

How exactly?

You were injured. It helps give you the look of innocence. Now you will have an easier time getting close to Dimitri.

I inhale slowly, willing my heart to calm. Chewing on the inside of my cheek, I try to be reasonable. Maybe Edvard has a point. If Dimitri had any doubts whatsoever about me, this unfortunate incident has given me a fairly convincing cover. I certainly didn’t expect Dimitri to protect me the way he did, throwing himself in the way without a second thought.

My face warms at the memory. I would never have expected him to do something so selfless. Guilt washes over me, cold and alarming. What would have happened if the bullet hit him instead of me? What if he haddied? I’m angry at first. Dimitri ismykill. But the more I think about it, the more I realize…
