“Dimitri?”

I turn to find Natalya making her way down the stairs. She rubs the sleep from her eyes, her lovely blonde locks spilling messily over her shoulders.

“Hello, angel.”

“What are you doing up so late?” she asks, yawning wide. She stops on the bottom step. “It’s almost two in the morning.”

“Some business came up,” I explain vaguely. “I need to take care of it as soon as possible.”

Natalya frowns, concern etched into the soft features of her face. “You’ll be safe, right?”

I approach her with a chuckle, cupping her face. “I’m always safe.”

She gives me a look like she doesn’t believe me. “When do you think you’ll be back?”

“Miss me already?”

“Oh, shut up,” she says without any heat.

I laugh softly. “I’m afraid I don’t know.” Her obvious worry washes off her in waves. With a small smile, I rub my thumb between her knitted brows. “Everything will be fine, Nat. I promise. I’ll be back before you wake up.”

She chews on the inside of her cheek, her thoughts a mystery to me. “Okay,” she murmurs, before leaning forward to kiss me sweetly.

I grasp her chin gently to keep her there, deepening the kiss. I tease her lips apart with the tip of my tongue, reveling in how she leans her weight against me.

Behind me, a man clears his throat. It’s Boris. He’s caught us in the act. Natalya gasps as she pulls away quickly, her cheeks a vibrant red. I’m not worried, however.

“What do you want?” I snap.

“The car’s ready, sir,” he answers dutifully.

“I’ll be right there.” I turn back to Natalya and grasp her by the back of the head, pulling her down for an even deeper, passionate kiss. I’m not ashamed that Boris knows. Natalya isn’t some dirty little secret. Besides, I know Boris values his tongue and will keep his mouth shut about what he saw.

When I pull away, I find Natalya staring at me with wide eyes, the smallest of grins tugging at the corners of her lips.

“I’ll be back soon,” I promise her.

She nods. “You’d better.”

I give her one more kiss for the road before turning to follow Boris out. The car is ready and waiting, a handful of my security team surrounding the car like a human barricade. Boris gets into the driver’s seat while I hop into the back. The whole process is very efficient. After a few final checks, we hit the road.

We drive in relative silence, though I’m more than a little aware of Boris’ questioning glances at me in the rearview mirror.

“So…” he says slowly. “You and the nanny, huh?”

I shoot him a pointed look. “Save your judgements.”

“I’m not judging, sir, I just… I know it’s not my place, but you seem happy.”

I allow his words to settle in. “Iamhappy.”

Boris nods. “I’m glad to hear it, sir.”

He doesn’t press me on the issue, which is one of the many reasons I like having Boris on my team. He does his job and never steps out of line. Despite this, I can’t help but feel as though he has more to say. It’s in the way he keeps glancing at me, something almost conspiratorial in his eyes.

I decide to ignore it. I chalk it up to my exhaustion and the late hour. Boris isn’t a gossip. Such things are beneath men like us. I’m sure it’s nothing.
