A low moan rises out of me. “Call me that again.”

“Husband…Myhusband…”

The sound of her voice goes straight to my cock. I can feel my arousal hardening in the front of my pants. I mentally scold myself. Now isn’t the time to be feeling my tired, injured wife up.

“I really should get you something to eat,” I tell her.

“There’s just one more thing I have to tell you,” she says.

“What?”

Alina’s pretty green eyes lock onto mine as she nibbles on her bottom lip. “It’s a really big deal. You have to promise not to freak out.”

My heart pounds. “Telling me not to freak out is a sure-fire way to make sure I freak out.”

“When I was at Natalya’s office, I mentioned I was feeling nauseated. It was actually the reason I left with Ben that night. I asked him to take me to see a doctor.”

I frown, sitting up a bit straighter in my growing alarm. “O—kay?” I answer slowly.

She takes a deep breath. “Natalya had me take a test. I’m pregnant, Pyotr.”

The air rushes out of my lungs. I stare at her in disbelief. My eyes flit down to her belly as a warm sense of pride and excitement swirls in my chest. Instinctively, my hand slips down to rest over her stomach.

“Our baby…”

“The first of six,” she teases lightly.

I don’t think my heart has ever felt fuller. Whatever troubles I thought I had suddenly vanish into thin air. Nothing else matters except for the little family I now hold in my arms.

“I want to make love to you, but I’ll just have to wait,” I tell her as I pull the comforter over her battered body.

Her smile is everything. Sweeter than candy, brighter than the sun, more brilliant than the stars above. She wraps her arms around me and kisses me softly. “It’ll be worth it.”

“Mother of my child,” I murmur into our next kiss. “God, I can’t believe it.”

She laughs as I kiss her again. “Are you happy?”

“So happy. Unbelievably happy. We’re going to fill that penthouse full of kids.”

“We’re going to have to kick Luka out to make space.”

“It’s about time he got his own place anyway.”

She laughs quietly, a laugh that causes a grimace of pain. But her smile is breathtaking.

No matter what tomorrow has in store for us—either our downfall or our unlikely triumph—I’m content as long as I have her.

We stare deeply into each other’s eyes, not a word exchanged. I explore the pretty green of her irises while she traces the line of my jaw with the tip of her finger. I’d gladly trade the remaining years of my life for each and every one of her soft giggles and shy smiles.

When her stomach grumbles loudly, I sit up. “Something to eat,” I say, getting out of bed in a hurry. “You stay right here.”

“Pyotr…”

“I’ll take care of everything, my beautiful wife. Just relax and take it easy.”

Alina smiles sleepily. “Thank you, husband.”
