Then as I leaned, quivering against that wall, I heard someone enter the kitchen. Tituss looked at me, smiled, winked, said, “Night, Harpy. Sleep tight.”

“But—”

The guy who came to the kitchen looked at me and said as if I was not a complete wreck, “Hey, I almost forgot. We need toothpaste and—”

I wanted to strangle him. “You didn’t forget. I have five different types on the list.”

“Oh.” He thought about it. “I—”

“I will murder you.” I looked at him. His eyes went wide. “I mean it. I have three items on that list you wrote down. I had to clarify, remember? I can’t read your tiny ass handwriting. The vegan, ya?” He nodded. “Go to bed!”

“Okay, yeah. Damn, Harpy, I was just trying to make sure you had everything. I—”

I gave him a look, and he left. That one was a neurotic mess. He was sweet but annoying as hell. Because I was not an object of lust or sex for anyone other than Tituss and Dane, everyone had taken to treating me like the head housekeeper. If they had a question, a request, a problem…fuck. I needed to get that shit cleared up before the other bunnies got even angrier with me. They hated me, obviously because Cass was one of them now, and I was the only one left on the first floor. Plus Tituss and Dane were…mine, sort of. I was sure they thought that on some level, if they were on the first floor with them, there would be luxury or privilege. Yeah, not really. They were all getting way more fun, affection, and orgasms than the first-floor help, me.

I left out the back door and crossed the lawn, headed toward the pool house, the Bunny House, as I tucked my list in my back pocket. Once I crossed the threshold to the pool, I got this odd feeling. Maybe a prickle at the back of my neck. I looked around but didn’t see anyone, anything.

I steeled my spine and held my head high. I had my phone in my hand, and I gripped it harder. I could hit someone with it if I needed to. I heard one word, and it crept me the fuck out so bad I did exactly as that voice commanded.

“Stop.”

I stood still. I was halfway to the house at this point. Almost home. None of my Sophomore House guys were awake, out here, walking me home. I wanted to turn, wanted to say something. I also didn’t want to get…I didn’t really know what some of these guys were capable of. I had heard rumors as I was cleaning, and the girls filtered in and out to grab snacks for the guys on the other floors. Everyone else in that Bunny House communicated. They knew things. I…did not.

“Why?” he asked.

I felt my face screw up with the thought of how to answer that. Only, in the next moment, I realized he wasn’t talking to me. A familiar voice said, “Why not?”

“You just don’t learn, do you?” he asked.

I took a tentative step forward, and that voice said, “Come here. You.”

I had a feeling I was ‘you.’ I turned and saw some guy dressed all in black, looking very much like he should be stalking about in the evenings up to no good next to the current quarterback, Dougie. My spine felt the chill roll through it.

I walked over to them. Waited. Unsure of what was happening.

Mr. Dark and Mysterious asked Dougie, “What was your plan? Huh?”

“I know her background. Do you?” Dougie asked with a smirk. I blinked up at him. “You said to know them, right? I looked. I—”

“You’re two words away from getting your status revoked.” Dark and Mysterious looked at me and said, “And you. You come with me.”

“I uh…I’m supposed to—”

“I’m not asking.” He waved his finger at me. Well, his fingers holding a cigarette. I looked at my phone. He snorted a laugh. “Yeah. They’ll figure it out soon enough. No need to text them. Come on.” He pointed at Dougie with that cigarette and said, “No. Understand? The answer you have from every Bunny in that house, any that is added on this year, is no. In fact, until you graduate, the answer from all women and men in this area is no. We don’t need that rep. You…want to keep walking…you don’t need that spotlight.”

Well, I would keep walking. Walking right behind this psycho because that was some television bad guy level threats coming from a guy who looked the part. Dane might be crazy, but this dude was fucking evil. I could feel it. I walked where he indicated, and my brow went up as we exited the pool area and headed to Junior House. He’s a fucking junior running the head senior like a show dog? Oh shit. He opened the back door to their house and reached for my hand. “Come on. You’re coming with me.”

“I can’t. I’m…theirs and you…I uh. I can’t lose this job. You—” I didn’t know what argument I needed to make.

He looked me up and down and said, “Do you think I’m trying to fuck you?”

I blinked, sort of nodded. Why the hell else was he dragging me to their house in the middle of the night after…well, rescuing me from someone I was sure had exactly those plans whether I complied or not. I pushed the thought aside. I didn’t know that for sure. I didn’t know anything anymore.

He shook his head and said, “You got some ego on you. Come the fuck on, and don’t make me repeat it.”

He tugged, and this time I walked, feeling the sting to more than my ego. Once in his room, he flipped the light on. He indicated the top bunk, which was a twin over what looked like a king on the bottom, and said, “That’s you tonight.”

He snatched my phone and put it on his desk. “That’s mine for now. The bathroom is right there. You can use the bathroom. You can sleep in that bed. You do not leave this room until I say so, understand?”
