“Jack shit,” Zach says.

“Diddly-squat,” Taylor adds.

“Nada,” Cory says.

I sigh. And they think that I’m going to be a lot of work. If they didn’t get anything worth keeping from the lesson we had today, then I’m going to have to back them up and figure out just where they got lost in this.

“You passed high school chemistry, right?” I ask.

The blank looks on their faces tell me either they didn’t, or if they did it was out of sheer luck or hope that they would go on to do greater things with their lives and the high school could boast about them coming from virtually nothing. Either way, I flip back to the first chapter of the book.

“Okay, have a seat,” I say.

They all sit on my bed, and I’m feeling nervous as I look at their faces.

“Let’s start at the beginning and kind of do an overview, I guess. I want to get a baseline for where you guys are and what I have to work with,” I tell them.

They’re enthusiastic enough about the idea, but it doesn’t take long before I feel like I’m talking to three brick walls rather than the three cocky young men who came into the dorm earlier this evening. It’s clear to me their talent is out on the ice.

Maybe in the bedroom, too, but clearly it’s not in the realm of science.

I force them to sit through an hour and a half of what I consider to be a good tutoring session, then we go over their notes.

“How fucked are we?” Zach asks.

“It’s a start,” I say. “You have to start somewhere.”

“Amen to that!” Zach says as he slaps his book closed. “Now it’s your turn.”

I give him a look, and he puts his hands on my shoulders and walks me sideways to the desk. “Kiss me.”

“What?”

Instead of repeating himself, he closes his eyes and leans in for a kiss.

It’s awkward, and I’m not sure what to do. Our noses are in the way, and I pull back too soon.

“I’m an idiot,” I say.

“No you’re not. Turn your head. Like this,” Zach says.

His voice is low and soothing, the traces of cockiness gone for the moment. He tilts my head to the side with his hands as he tilts his own head the opposite direction, and this time when our lips meet I feel a shock run through me. I’ve never been kissed like this before in my life, and I can only imagine what it must look like to the other two in the room.

If feels like we’re in the movies with our heads turned to the side, and I’m not sure what Zach is doing to my mouth, but it’s making goosebumps rise along my arms.

“Not bad,” Zach says as he stands up. “Taylor, you give it a go and see what you think.”

Taylor now comes forward and this time I tilt my head the same way Zach showed me. My lips meet Taylor’s immediately, and I feel the same shock wave run through me as before. Taylor’s way of kissing me is similar to Zach’s, but he pulls back after a moment.

“Move around a bit,” he says. “You don’t want to just stand there like a statue.”

“What do you mean? How?” I ask.

“Like, think of it like you’re going across a row of corn on the cob, but you’re not biting. Instead, use just your lips,” he says.

I try it, and I’m shocked with how easy it is.

“I think we have a natural here.” Taylor grins as he takes a step back. “Cory.”
