Finally, we’ve had enough sex, and we all climb into bed with her.

“I can’t remember the last time we all slept in the same bed,” she says. “I missed this.”

“We missed you,” Caleb says.

“I don’t want to miss you ever again,” I tell her. “It sucks.”

“You have to promise us you’re not going anywhere too,” Julian informs her. “It’s a two-way street, you know.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” she tells us. “I promise.”

The feeling of relief that comes over me is exhilarating, and I know we’ve made the right decision. It wasn’t easy tracking her down, and it was a risk for us to come all this way to talk to her, but now that we have, now that we know that she’s willing to work with us, I know this was the right choice all along.

And I’m never going to make the same mistake again.

I can’t.

I love her too much.

TWENTY-EIGHT

CALEB

I’m brushing my teeth in the bathroom of the hotel when I hear an argument break out in the other room. Jeanette spent the night with us, and I hoped that meant that things were on the mend.

But it quickly becomes evident as I rinse my mouth that things being totally fine between us and Jeanette isn’t going to happen overnight.

From what I can tell, the argument is between her and Julian.

I sigh.

I don’t want this to erupt into something bigger. And I don’t want to come all this way to ask her to come back to us, only to have some stupid argument break us apart the next morning. We’ve worked too hard to get her back to let that be the case.

So I head out to find out what’s going on.

Terry left to get some breakfast for us as we don’t want to have what the hotel has to offer, so it’s just Julian and Jeanette in the other room.

“What the fuck are you two arguing about?” I ask. “Geez. With the way you’re carrying on, you’re making it seem like the dog died.”

“There’s a voicemail on my phone from Clarissa,” Julian says. “She called me earlier and I didn’t answer because I was hanging out with Jeanette, and now Jeanette’s pissed because she thinks I’m hiding it.”

“If there wasn’t anything to hide, then why didn’t you answer when she called, and why does she want to meet up with you? I thought you said you were working on shit!” she snaps.

“We are working on shit,” Julian snaps back. “I told you that there were going to be things you had to deal with during this time, and until we get to the point we have shit worked out with her, she’s going to be in the picture.”

“Last time she showed up, I walked out on you guys. Don’t think I’m not going to do it again,” Jeanette says as she folds her arms over her chest. “I told you last night I’m not going to have my heart broken by you guys again, and if you aren’t going to let her go, then I’m out. I’m not going through this!”

“You also said you would work with us to get through this,” I tell her. “And I expect you to uphold your end of the bargain.”

“What do you want me to do?” she demands. “Just pretend that you’re not going to go meet with the girl that you got pregnant, the girl you were making out with? The girl that said she didn’t want me to have anything to do with Hendrix? And I’m just supposed to love this and not worry about what’s going to happen with you guys while you’re there?”

“No one said that, but we did ask you to be patient and work with us while we get through this,” I say. “I know you’re not happy with this, but we have to go through some of the unpleasant things until we have everything with Hendrix worked out. I know it’s not always easy for you to accept things about us, but these are the choices that we made, and this is where we are now.”

“I don’t like it,” she snaps.

“And you don’t have to,” Julian says. “No one is asking you to do anything here but trust us.”

“And that’s the problem, I don’t,” she says.
