I clear my throat. “Right. Maybe it’s more about me mourning the life I thought I was going to have than it is about him. I figured I’d have started a family by the time I was thirty and that we’d have bought a house and all the stuff that comes with that.”

Chase scoffs. “You’re still young, Twyla. You’re not thirty for what, another five years?”

“Sure, but it takes time to meet someone special, date them, and decide you want to spend your life with them.”

He chuckles. “Not if you’re Brady and Violet.”

I smile. “True.” I take another sip of my drink. “Where are the restrooms?”

He turns and points toward the corner of the room on his right side. “Down that hallway.”

“Okay, I’ll be right back.”

I push out my chair and walk over to where Chase directed me. My phone buzzes in my back pocket and I pull it out as I’m pushing through the ladies’ room door. Mathew’s name is on the screen and I still immediately.

What the hell is he doing calling me today of all days?

My thumb hovers over the redX, but something in me won’t let me press it. For some reason, I want to hear whatever lame thing he has to say. Before I can think too hard about my decision, I click on the check mark and bring the phone to my ear, but I don’t say anything.

After a few seconds of silence, he says, “Twyla? I didn’t think you’d answer.”

“I wasn’t going to. Why are you calling?” I step farther into the two-stall bathroom.

“You know what today is.”

I lean my butt against the sink that’s seen better days. “Exactly. So why are you calling?”

“I thought maybe you were feeling the same way I am today.” He sighs.

“Which is how, Mathew?”

“Full of regret.”

That surprises me, and I blink a few times. “At this moment, I’m a little more full of rage than anything.”

“I know I messed up. I’m sorry I hurt you.”

I scoff. I can’t help it. “Seriously? You call off our engagement because you say you fell in love with someone else, yet you’re calling me on the day that would have been our wedding and making it sound like you made a mistake?”

“I think maybe I did make a mistake.”

I can picture him pulling on his hair the way he always did whenever he was stressed.

“You are unbelievable.” I hit End on the call and put my phone on Do Not Disturb. “Unreal!” I shout into the empty bathroom before heading into the stall to do my business.

By the time I emerge to wash my hands, I’m incensed. How dare he? Did he call today because he thought I might be at my weakest? Well screw him.

Angry and agitated, I head out of the bathroom, determined to have a good time tonight and remove all thoughts of my loser ex from my mind.

When I reenter the bar area, I see that a group of three guys has entered the bar in my absence. They’re at a table closer to the front of the bar, but they’re making a lot of noise and are a lot rowdier than anyone else.

I walk over to the end of the bar and get Randy’s attention. “I’ll have another rum and Coke, please.”

“Sure thing, sweetheart. I’ll bring it over to you after I fix up these guys’ drinks.” He nods toward the noisy table.

“Great, thanks.” I stomp back over to the table where Chase sits and flop down into my seat.

He eyes me warily. “Everything okay?”
