Without turning away from them, I say, “Twyla, go back to the table.”

“But—”

“Table, Twyla. Now.”

I hear her walk away, and that’s when I step forward so I’m chest to face with the guy. “Next time you talk to a lady, do it with some respect. We’re leaving now, but don’t let me see your face in here again or we’re going to have a problem. Got it?” I arch an eyebrow.

He scoffs but doesn’t say anything, so I step back and turn to make my way to where Twyla is standing beside the table. Her eyes go wide. Next thing I know, someone jumps on my back.

Jesus Christ.

I bend at the waist and flip him over my head so he lands with a crash on the floor. When I spin around, one of the friends has his fist cocked, but I catch it with my left hand and use my right hand to punch him in the face. He wobbles back a few steps and crashes against a table, tipping it over.

The other friend comes running at me like a linebacker. I meet him halfway, tossing him onto the pool table.

I turn to make my way back to Twyla and the first guy I got into it with is wobbling to his feet.

I point at him and shout, “Stay down.”

He thinks better of getting up and stays where he is.

Twyla’s looking at me with wide eyes and disbelief. I don’t know what comes over me, but when I reach her, I toss her over my shoulder before walking toward the door.

“Sorry for the mess, Randy. Send me the bill.”

He nods and waves me off.

I’m not worried about this coming back to bite me in the ass. Everyone else here are regulars and will cover for me. Even if it did come back to haunt me though, it would have been worth it to keep Twyla safe from pieces of shit like that.

Once we’re out on the sidewalk, Twyla asks, “Chase, why are you carrying me?”

It’s dark now, but we’ve caught the attention of a few people.

“I don’t know,” I answer honestly.

“Can you put me down? I’m getting dizzy.”

Shit.I gently bend and set her on her feet, gripping her waist to make sure she’s steady on her feet before I let go.

“Sorry,” I mumble.

“Don’t be.” She’s looking up at me in something like drunken awe. “I know I shouldn’t like it, but that was all kinds of hot, having you go all alpha male protective mode for me.”

I chuckle. “Is that what that was?” I thought it was good old-fashioned jealousy.

“And then you just threw me over your shoulder. Definitely hot.”

“Blame the muscles.” I give her a wink at her inside joke and take her hand. “C’mon. I don’t think those guys will try to follow us and come looking for more trouble, but let’s get out of here.”

She lets me lead her home, never dropping my hand until we get into the elevator. There, Twyla presses her body against mine, winding her arms around my neck.

“What are you doing?”

“Showing you how hot that was.” She rises on her tiptoes and moves in to kiss me, but I pull away.

She frowns. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” The elevator dings and the doors slide open, and I step out of the elevator. “How do you feel about sleeping at my place tonight?” I want to make sure she isn’t sick overnight since she’s had a lot to drink.
