I release a relieved breath. “Good.”

Violet cocks her head to the side. “But… won’t you have to tell Miles eventually?”

My shoulders slump. “Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t even know exactly what’s going on between us. We haven’t discussed what any of it means.”

“I guess the question is, do youwantit to mean something?”

“That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it?”

But it’s one I can’t answer yet.

That evening, I walk into Chase’s condo and find him lying on the couch with Zeus asleep on his big chest and I’m pretty sure my ovaries combust.

“Should I be jealous?” I joke.

He shakes his head. “Nah, I’d take your pussy over this one any day.”

His words make me blush, but I secretly thrill.

“Noted.” He taps the spot next to him on the couch, so I sit down, book in hand. “Are you ready for our first official book club meeting?”

“I have no idea.” When I give him a quizzical look, he explains. “I read the book. Beyond that, I’m not sure what to expect.”

“We’ll just chat about it. I prepared some questions to generate conversation and we can share our favorite quotes, favorite parts of the book. Anything goes really.”

“I’ll do my best, but I can’t promise I’ll have comments as insightful as your book club in Connecticut.”

I give him a chaste kiss on the lips. “Thank you for doing this for me. Now where’s your book? You might need to reference it.”

“It’s on the dresser in my bedroom. Can you get it?” He gives me the cutest little pleading look and I picture him trying to use this on his parents when he was little. “I don’t want to have to wake Zeus.”

I can’t help but chuckle. “For a guy who seemed to not be into the cat at all at first, you sure seem to like him now.”

“He’s growing on me,” he reluctantly admits.

With another laugh, I get off the couch and retrieve the book, passing it to him and picking up mine from where I left it on the couch cushion. I made annotations in my book and added tabs where there’s something I want to discuss.

“Wow, you even color-coordinated all your little tabs.”

I look at the book with pride. The cover is mostly hot pink with light blue and white and I’ve used the same colors for my tabs.

“It’s a bookish thing,” I say, and he gives me an indulgent smile. I open the book to the first marker. “All right, the first thing I wanted to chat about was some of the obstacles the hero and heroine felt stood in their way when they first met… besides the fact that she accidentally shot him.”

“I liked that part,” he says.

“That’s such a guy thing to say.” I playfully roll my eyes and shake my head. “So, Ollie felt like the ten-year age gap was an issue, while Jemma initially was concerned about the perceived status difference since he’s a children’s heart surgeon and she’s an elementary teacher. Do you think either of those things should be an issue for them?”

“I don’t think any of that shit makes a difference. What matters is how they feel about each other and how they treat each other. End of.”

I contemplate his answer and decide to play devil’s advocate. “True, but don’t you think societal pressures can play into the dynamic of a relationship? For instance, if everyone around them had an issue with one or both of those things, don’t you think it would weigh on them and eventually creep into their dynamic with each other?”

Chase studies me for a beat. “Are you asking because you’re a teacher and I’m a professional athlete?”

I blink in shock. The thought honestly hadn’t occurred to me. “No, not at all. I’m just talking about the book.”

“Okay, because if you are—”

“Honestly, Chase. I’m just talking about the book and relationships in general. Besides, it’s not like we’re in an official relationship, right?”
