“I’d believe you if you weren’t laughing.”

That made him laugh more, and I stomped my feet quickly on the floor like it would made the pain go away.

“Ow,” I whimpered, finally releasing my nose and looking over at him through slightly watery eyes. “Warn me before you say something funny.”

“I didn’t know it was funny.” He was still laughing, the arsehole. “Sorry. Are you all right?”

“I am now.” I blew out a breath. “No thanks to you.”

“Hey, I bought you McDonald’s.”

“Ah, yes, the pinnacle of romance.”

“Good thing I’m not trying to romance you, then, isn’t it?” He grinned. “We have to kill about half an hour before we can go back and pretend we ate at the fancy restaurant.”

I didn’t think about that.

“Is anyone else going to be there when we get back?”

“Yes, but it’s also a giant fucking castle,” William said. “So there’s a good chance we can run and hide before anyone knows we’re there.”

“Just a good chance?” I asked, raising my eyebrows. “Or will there be actual wedding drama to listen to?”

He held up his finger then moved so he could get his phone out of his pocket. “I’ll find out.” He tapped away at the screen before putting it down. It lit up a moment later and he peered at the notification. “Nope. Freya is with James, and my parents are at their cottage. Grandpa and Grandma will probably be going to bed soon.”

“Who’s James?”

“Oh, her fiancé. It looks like you’re meeting everyone tomorrow.”

“Can’t wait.”

“At least try and look excited.”

“I can’t. I think snorting the milkshake up my nose broke my brain.”

He laughed. “Are you done? We can drive down to the watchtower by the loch to waste a bit of time before we go back.”

“Sounds good. Do you know the history of it?”

William paused. “I might.”

“What are we waiting for? Let’s go.”

CHAPTER ELEVEN – GRACE

History Is Hot

“Oh, it’s freezing,” I murmured, pulling my hood up over my head. “Whose idea was this?”

William chuckled and locked the car. “Mine, but you agreed.”

“I may have misjudged the situation,” I replied somewhat stoically. “There better be some good history to make freezing my tits off worth it.”

“The watchtower is just over there. Come on. We’ll get some shelter from the breeze in there.”

“In there? We can go in? It’s open?”

He produced a key from his pocket. “It is if you’ll own it one day.”
