Put that way, it made him wish it was real. Maybe not for himself; that seemed like tempting fate. But for her.

For Emilia.

Of course, no good thing could last where Harrison was concerned.

Honestly, he’d never known when to keep his mouth shut. And getting a reaction from Hayley was infinitely more fun than thinking about meet-cutes.

This was why he preferred working alone.

Hayley looked like she wanted to skewer him with her pen. Harrison almost wanted her to. It couldn’t be half as painful as fighting over expositional dialogue.

“Harry, please,” she pleaded.

“Too much?”

She pinched the bridge of her nose. “Have you seenJohn Wick?”

He nodded. Who hadn’t?

“Well. If you keep talking, I’m going to follow his example and destroy you with this pen. Not just once. But many, many times. And I’m going to enjoy it.”

“If you really want to stick me with something, you only need to ask.”

“Stop distracting me.”

He wished he could.

Truth was, he’d never had any self-control when it came to her. Even during the months he’d enforced his own ban on pursuing her, he’d followed her career closely, trying not to feel like the world’s biggest creep by reliving their night together.

No, the best thing he could do was remind her of what a terrible combination they were. Oil and water. Toothpaste and orange juice. Jared Leto and the Joker.

There wasn’t any way of putting distance between them, not in a room this small, but that didn’t stop him from trying.

A weary sigh preceded her next question. “Why do you hate these movies so much? You’re practically waging a one-man war against love.”

“Bit melodramatic, don’t you think?” he said, avoiding his reasons to focus on their Post-it wall, the pops of color breaking up the beige.

In all the years that they’d crossed paths, events and film festivals and social gatherings, he’d been drawn to her. And every single time, he had put himself in her path, soaking in the familiar crackle of wit and intrigue around her, hypnotized by the fire in her eyes.

When she focused on him, the room disappeared. No one existed except the two of them.

He couldn’t get enough.

It’s why he’d stayed away. The industry was abysmally small, giving him multiple chances to see her again, and he’d avoided every single one.

But now that he was back in her orbit, he wondered how he’d managed to be without it.

How had he gone a single day without her smile, or her sharp focus and rapier tongue, as talented with words as it was stroking his own? Trailing the rivets of his abs, or the throbbing vein along his cock.

Fuck.Don’t think about that.

When he looked over at her, Hayley simply raised her eyebrows, challenging him without a single word.

He relented. “I’ve never seen a single one I could believe in.” It wasn’t the full story, but it wasn’t a lie.

“And now you have the power to change that. Or are you not up to the challenge?” she teased. “I seem to remember you having more stamina than this.”
