Focusing on the script should have helped. He’d stopped complaining long enough to be helpful, or so he’d thought.

Maybe she’d finally had enough of him. Seen this as the disaster he’d proclaimed it to be. It shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did.

He was clearly out of his depth — not a surprise. Opening his mouth around Hayley had only ever gotten him into trouble.

So why had she been punching the keys on her laptop like they offended her? The crease of her brow was so pronounced it made him nervous.

Blessedly, a knock sounded at the door, cutting into their fourth debate of the day.

Harrison balled his hand into a fist, staring Hayley down. “I don’t care if it’s expected. I’ll let a miscommunication trope into this script over my cold, dead body.”

She was practically vibrating with frustration. “Oh, you’re so…”

He was sure Hayley was going to throw her tea at him.

He was even more sure that he deserved it.

“Sexy? Suave? Right?”

“More like frustrating, arrogant, and pessimistic.”

The door opened. It was the hotel manager. Harrison sat straighter. “Not again.”

“So sorry to bother you, but we’ve had another problem with the rooms.”

“Of course you have. What now? A visiting prince in disguise? A rockstar with a bleak past and a heart of gold? A wisecracking waitress who can’t access her inheritance unless she gets married?”

“That last one’s pretty good actually,” Hayley said, taking notes.

“Actually, it’s a problem with Ms. Bennett’s room.”

Her head whipped up so fast it was comical. Harrison had to bite back a laugh. It sure felt good to not be on the receiving end of her glare for once.

“I’m so sorry, but we had a system failure this morning, and it recorded you as checked out.”

“So check me back in.”

“I’m afraid I can’t. One of our trainees checked another couple into the room an hour ago. I’m trying to sort it out, but I don’t have any other rooms right now. I know you and Mr. Kyle are close, so I sent your bags up to his suite.”

Now she was staring at Harrison. “Suite?”

Shit. He hadn’t planned on mentioning that.

The manager placed a card on the table. “I went ahead and made an extra key. I’ll just leave you two. Sorry again.”

Sure he was.

27 INT. BALLROOM — EVENING (FLASHBACK)

OMITTED

Hayley ripped the Post-it off the wall, pinning Harrison with an unimpressed stare while she pressed the square into his chest. “You can’t cut to a flashback halfway through the narrative, Harry.”

Frankly, it was a little harsh. “Why not? No one will be expecting that.”
