I cock one eyebrow, grinning at him. He grabs my hand not currently holding shoes, and then he frowns at them. I bend and set them down so he can take both my palms in his.

“I love you.” He reaches up to pull my head to his, planting a soft kiss on my lips. “Will you marry me?”

I pull back to search his face, and then I notice my ring that he’s holding in front of me. He doesn’t move to place it on my finger, instead waiting for my answer. He’s giving me the choice now. He knows what I’ll say, but now, he wants to hear it.

I pause, making him sweat a little as I stare at the ring. It’s as beautiful as it was the first time he gave it to me, but this time, it holds so much more promise. I put my left hand out, letting him slip it onto my finger.

“Yes,” I tell him, unable to stop a single tear from leaking out. I quickly brush it away and sniff, then smile, holding my hand up to the light. My finger has felt barren until now.

He grabs my face, planting another passionate kiss on me before releasing me to quite literally sweep me off my feet. I shriek at the sudden movement, grabbing for his shoulder and swatting his chest as he strides from the stairs.

He sets me down in his study, and I startle when I see someone else in there. A man nervously works his finger under his priest collar.

“What, now?” I ask through a laugh.

“Now,” Connor says, grabbing my hands in his and staring down at me as the priest launches into the wedding spiel.

The ceremony passes as quickly as the first, but this time, joy fills my entire soul as we never break eye contact. I study every crease and crevice of Connor’s face, memorizing this moment as we truly, in our souls, become husband and wife.

Then, he’s dipping me, ravishing my mouth, leaving me breathless before scooping me up like a rag doll again.

He throws a quick, “Thank you,” to the priest before rushing us from the room that holds so much of our lives.

I’m laughing as he deposits me in a vehicle and checks the back for luggage, I’m assuming. Then, in a whirlwind, we are pulling away from the Soltorre mansion.

“Where are we going?” I ask, and he glances over at me.

“Wherever we want,” he says. “But first, we are stopping in to see someone.” He raises the console of the car and pulls out an object. “This time, I’ve got a book for her.”

I look down to seeThe Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm.

“The book you never brought back?” I ask.

He nods. “It’s time to return it.”

“Did you bring your checkbook?” I ask him, and he furrows his brow at me in confusion. “I might owe her bond money.”

Connor’s laughter rings out between us, and I grin as he pushes a lock of my hair behind my ear.

“My little criminal. I’ll pay your debt. And then we can go on a proper honeymoon.”

My life has become a real fairy tale. I study my ring, and I know I’ve attached myself to the big, bad wolf. But he’s my wolf, and I’m his little bird.

The End
