He continues to crowd me, then plants both arms on the mirror behind me. I vaguely register the door to the gym opening and closing. Geo must have left. I glance up at Connor’s face, seeing the wolfish smile he’s wearing at having me pinned.

He leans down slightly, resting his mouth beside my ear. “What would you do in this situation?” he asks.

It takes me a moment to realize that he’s not whispering sexy nothings to me. Instead, he decided to begin training.

I huff. “Very funny.”

He raises one eyebrow. “I’m not laughing, Little Bird. Show me what you’ve got.”

I narrow my eyes at him and then try to duck underneath one of his arms, but he throws his weight to the side, lowering that arm and keeping me between him and the mirror. I bring one knee up, aiming for his dick, but he shifts deftly to the side, letting my attack hit his hip, and he doesn’t budge. I try to use the side of my hand to whack him on his arm, and it does nothing, so I try the same maneuver from the bottom and manage to dislodge his hand a little bit. I whoop in delight. He doesn’t react.

“I don’t know what to do,” I admit, and he brings his body closer to me.

“I have the advantage of height and weight. I’m stronger. Your little kicks and jabs do nothing to me. Try again.”

I glare at him. “Are you calling me weak?” It makes my chest burn when I realize that Bertrand said the same thing.

“Physically, you are,” he says, not looking one bit sorry about it.

“Then, this is a moot point. I’m doomed to fail anyway,” I say, frustration evident in my voice.

I let my arms drop, and I relax my stance, affronted. He grins, moving in closer until I slam my head forward, my forehead meeting his nose. A whoosh of air leaves his open mouth. I look up, watching the blood pour from his nostrils as he stares at me in shock.

“Guess I have to rely on the element of surprise.”

As the blood continues to flow, guilt consumes me for attacking him like that.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry,” I say, grimacing at the amount of red leaking from him. I look around, finding a towel folded in a basket and grabbing it, holding it to his nose. “Don’t tilt back. That’s a myth.”

“I’ve had a bloody nose before, Wryn,” Connor says, managing to insert a whole lot of sarcasm into his nasally words.

“Right. I’m sorry, really. I wasn’t thinking. I just reacted.”

“Out of anger. You must be calm when on the offense. Don’t give in to their taunts. That’s where they will want you. Always be one step ahead of them.”

He moves to sit down, keeping the towel over his nose. It’s slowly blooming into a red towel as the blood seeps through the fibers. He takes it off, folding it and reapplying.

“For you, the element of surprise will always be your greatest asset, and I think you demonstrated how adept you are at it. But for practicality, you do need to know some general things, and then we can expand.”

I nod, taking it in.

So, the element of surprise is good, but don’t bloody my husband’s nose.

Got it.

“You are small, so you want to use that to your advantage. Make yourself a small target. Use your delicate looks to work for you, not against you. They will think they have you figured out, and then you hit them with whatever self-defense moves you can, taking them down.”

I absorb his words.

“Here’s the most important part. Once you have them down, you get out of there. They won’t fall for it twice. Incapacitate as quickly as possible. Go for the pressure points,” he says, demonstrating where they are on my body.

I touch each spot where his hand lingers, memorizing. Then, his fingertips trail along my skin between each area, leaving goose bumps in their wake. I shiver, and he smirks.

Then, he leans in and says, “Then, finally, when in doubt, a direct hit to the balls will drop them.”

I can’t help the bark of laughter that sneaks out of me. He sounded so professional until the very end, and now, I’m not sure if he’s fucking with me.

“What? I’m serious. They are a very vulnerable spot on a man.” His hand moves to cover his own as I eye his crotch. “Quit looking at mine. You’ve already wounded me.”
