But we aren’t, and no manner of wishing will ever make that true. We will always be the pair that was brought together by fate, but not the good kind. The kind that takes tortured, tormented people and connects them in a twisted way. We will always be the couple who married for business and have a ghost that exists between us.

The thought of Ruby puts a damper on my mood, and I shift. Connor must sense it because he removes his hand, placing it back on the steering wheel, but he doesn’t say anything. With each new day that passes, I start to lose my hope of finding her alive. I start to think that maybe she wasn’t sold, but was killed, and I instantly hate myself when the thoughts invade my mind.

She wouldn’t ever stop looking for me, and I am disappointed in myself when I start to give up. She also wouldn’t have ever taken my man, and yet here I am, married to and fucking hers.

What will she think when—if—I do find her? What will she think of me?

“Everything okay?” Connor asks.

I nod, blinking rapidly to clear the tears gathering in my eyes. “I’m fine,” I say.

We fall quiet again. I hate the silence right now. It gives me too much room to think.

“If you won’t tell me where we are going, can you give me hints?”

“No.”

“Can I try and guess?”

“No. Now, quit trying to get answers out of me. We are almost there.”

I look out the window, watching the streetlights fade into the distance. They aren’t replaced by new ones on this stretch of road. It’s dark, only lit by our headlights.

“Are you bringing me out here to kill me?” I ask, half in jest. I know he’s capable of it, but so am I.

Maybe it’s good we found each other. We are well matched, as they say.

Connor huffs, but doesn’t say anything. I’m not sure how to take that. Reasonably, I know he’s not going to kill me, but a little kernel of fear starts to sprout in my chest, and I grip the door handle.

“Will you relax? I’m not going to kill you. Not tonight.”

“That makes me feelsomuch better.” I release my death grip on the door.

He finally brings the car to a stop, and I lean forward, peering into the distance. There’s … nothing around. He’s brought me to an empty field of grass and scattered trees. That’s it.

I stay seated as he turns off the car and opens his door, getting out and standing. Then, he circles the front and opens my door. I still sit there.

“Connor, what are we doing out here?” I ask, and he leans down, peering inside the door.

“I wanted to show you something,” he says.

He stretches his arm out, his hand open and waiting for mine. I stare at it for a moment, then unfasten my seat belt and grasp his large palm in my smaller one. He pulls, and I let him. He doesn’t step back, and suddenly, I’m pressed against him, my thin dress material leaving little to the imagination. His free hand wraps around my lower back, keeping us together.

I peer up at him, and I can only see half of his face, illuminated by the light coming from inside the car. He leans down, his face beside mine, and he takes a deep breath at the base of my ear.

“You smell so good,” he whispers, sending goose bumps traveling all over my body.

My nipples harden between us.

“I might have taken a shower,” I whisper back, and he shakes with suppressed laughter.

I wait, seeing what he’s going to do next. We stand like that for a moment before he steps back, and I deflate for a second after thinking he was going to take it further than he did. He leans back in, pressing a chaste kiss to my lips.

I’m speechless. If you had held a gun to my head and told me to predict what would happen tonight, this isn’t what I would have told you. So far from it.

Who is this gentle man in front of me? When has he ever given me a soft kiss? What does it mean?

He steps back a little, and I move out from in front of him, then watch as he leans my seat forward and reaches into the tiny backseat of the car, pulling out a basket.
