Have I been so distracted lately that I can’t even keep up with the comings and goings of my own people?

My mind strays to the little noises Wryn makes in her throat when I’m fucking her from behind.

Yeah, I guess I have been.

I decide the last place he would be is his room in the common quarters. It’s where those who work for me live, but I don’t stray down there much—I don’t have any need to.

I knock on his door and wait when I hear shuffling inside. There’s whispering, but I can’t make out what’s being said.

I’m frowning when he opens the door, but only a crack, looking surprised to see me standing here.

“I need to talk to you,” I say, my eyes darting behind him, but I can’t see anything with the small amount of light emanating from the dark depths.

“I’ll be right out,” he says.

We study each other for a moment before he sighs. Leaving the door cracked and walking into the room. He knows I would get it out of him eventually. I push the door a little more and spy him throwing a shirt on. But then I see her.

Fuck.

Francesca is sitting against his headboard, a sheet pulled over her body, and she’s staring straight at me.

Fuck.Just what I fucking need.

I stalk away and whirl on Geo when he follows me across the house and into my office.

“What the fuck are you doing? You’re ten years older than her. She’s—”

“You think I don’t know that?” Geo asks, reacting to my blatant fury. “It was a mistake.”

“God, Geo, this is fucked up. She isn’t staying here. Was that your plan? Fuck her and then never have to see her again?”

“No. She came on to me.”

“And I know why she did,” I say, turning.

I slam the phone down between us. Geo stares at it.

“I don’t understand,” he says.

“She’s our mole. She has to be. I don’t have proof, but she has two phones. Brigette says she’s been acting weird.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. For God’s sake, Connor, she’s on the run from a violent man. Anyone would be scared. Are you even listening to yourself? She can’t be the mole. How would she even be in contact with the four?”

“Fuck!” I yell. “I’m losing it. I don’t know who to even trust anymore.” I sink into the chair behind me while Geo sits across from me. “I have to at least question her.”

“I know,” Geo says. “You would be an idiot not to.”

A beat of silence passes.

I lean forward, smacking my good hand on the desk in front of us.

“What about Arie?” I ask.

Geo’s head jerks toward me. “What about her? It’s not like we are together,” he says a little bitterly. “It’s not like she would even care.”

“So, that’s over?”

“It never began.”
