“Yeah, he hacked the guy Wryn was using for her new identity. Wiped his stuff. She won’t be able to leave for a while.”

“Good. That will delay things until I can focus on it again.”

“What are we going to do?”

“I’m sending you in for intel at the club. How good are you at disguises?”

“No.”

“Yes, get ready to shave your head. We’ve got work to do.”

WRYN

I’m sorry. My computer crashed. I can’t do anything right now.

I stare at the message from the guy I was paying to make my new identification and passport. I huff, sitting back. I had finally found someone that I thought could pull it off and make it look legit, but now, I get this back from him. I guess everything was going so well that it was time for something to throw a wrench in my plans. I’m not even sure where to look for anyone else.

How long will it take to be up and running again?

I send the message and close my computer. I can’t wait around any longer. I have to get ready for my shift at the diner. I quickly shower, put my hair up in a claw clip, and get dressed in my uniform. My bed is littered with papers and sketches as I work on my classes. I chose to go the art therapy route, wanting to combine my love of design into something that would be beneficial for others. It will take time, but that’s something I have in spades now. I’m working toward a bachelor’s degree in psychology before I apply for my master’s. But I’m so happy with my life now.

So happy.

Mostly.

Maybe I’m lying to myself.

I shove the thoughts away as I grab my purse and open my door. I live a few blocks down from the diner, so I generally walk, enjoying the fresh air and vitamin D that I get.

“Hi, Roger,” I say to the grumpy, old man who lives in the apartment next to me.

He owns the apartments, and it seems he’s taken a liking to me. His mouth tilts up in the barest hint of a smile at my greeting. That’s about all I can get out of him. But I’ll take it.

“You got a package,” he says, grunting a little as he gestures to the box beside my door.

I pick it up, shoving it inside before turning to lock the door.

“You need to sign some paperwork. You have to verify your new account and give permission for us to do withdrawals for your rent.”

“What?” I ask, unsure what he’s talking about. “I do?”

“Yes, come by the office after your shift,” is all he says before walking back inside and shutting the door.

I stare at it for a moment before I remember I need to get a move on. I haven’t changed anything. He must be confused.

My mind is turning the entire walk to work. I start to think about every little thing that’s happened to me since I left Connor. Everything that has gone my way or seemed way easier than I was expecting.

I’m in a fog during my shift. Even Riley quits trying to talk to me after I give her enough one-worded answers. I’m not trying to be mean, but I’m not able to comprehend anything.

He did it. He’s done it all. For me. After I betrayed him, he’s been taking care of me, and I haven’t seen it. It’s been right there in front of my face, and I’ve ignored all the signs.

I stop by the office when I get back to my apartment, greeting Roger, who is sitting behind his desk.

“What’s this about a change in account?”

“You’ve changed accounts for immediate withdrawal on your rent. I need your signature, saying that we can take the money out.”
