“Yeah. I’m looking forward to it and it was good to see Mara and the other staff who used to work with Father.”

“I thought that might help. The other thing I wanted to talk to you about is Jason.”

At the mention of that fucking name my insides twist and tighten.

“Oh really?” I do my best to sound nonchalant, but my brain is already racing ahead. I’ll bet anything this was the real part of the conversation. Not to check about how I felt about going back to the company.

“Yes. After the work he’s done here and all he’s done so far I want to elect him to the board of directors and make him our chief financial officer.”

At first I think I’m hearing things. As if my mind is conjuring up the worst case scenarios and laying them before me.

But a few seconds pass and when Igor is saying my name as if he’s waiting on an answer, I realize what he just said was real.

“Of course I would appreciate if you could back me up,” Igor adds.

I swear to fuck the sound that rips through me is a growl. “Are you fucking kidding me?” I don’t think I’ve ever taken that tone with him or spoken words like that ever.

“Dante, there is no need to get angry. This would be a good move for us and we would benefit from Jason’s legal and financial experience, much less his position as governor.”

I don’t know what the hell to say. How can he think this is a good idea?

Now Jason isn’t just a leader in our Bratva but also my family’s company. The same company my forefathers built from scratch. The same company my father died in.

“I don’t agree with this,” I grunt. “I will never back you up on this and you know that. This could be more wrong.”

He’s silent for a moment then he sighs. “I’m sorry you feel that way boy. I’ve already made my decision, so whether you support me or not it’s happening.”

“Father would never stand for this.” My voice raises, filling the room.

“Your father is not here. I am. That may sound harsh but I have to lead this company the best way I know how.” His sigh of frustration crackles across the line. “I think we should talk another time before this gets out of hand.”

“Maybe.” But I’m not going to change my mind.

I hang up before he can say anything else and rest my hands on the counter top with my shoulders hunched over.

Virgo quite rightly pointed out the other day that Jason will only rise in power. Look how quickly that happened.

Jesus, I need to up the game. But what can I do though besides walk up to the motherfucker and put a bullet in his head.

Maybe that would be worth it and whatever consequence I might have to face after from the Bratva—which would be death.

Igor might love me as his family, but it is our law. Killing any member of the elite like the Obshak for your own personal reasons means death for you too.

Is he not worth dying for?

No.

I don’t fear death, but I won’t die for him and I won’t see my company and my Bratva in his hands. It’s clear Jason is after power and my uncle is just serving it up to him on a plate.

“Are you okay?” comes a little voice from behind me.

It’s Serenity.

I don’t look around just yet. Not until I compose myself and school my anger. I don’t want her to see me this way. I don’t want her to see the monster.

“Dante.” She says my name with more fervency.

I turn although I’m not ready and hate that she’s his daughter. I hate this conflict she doesn’t know about and I hate that I can’t be real with her.
