“Concern is a box of chocolate and a bid of farewell once he’s sure you’re fine. The guy told his men to make sure you were well taken care of, ensure you had everything you needed, and to get you home safely.”

I narrow my eyes on her. “Wait a minute. I don’t remember him saying all of that.”

She gives me a saucy smile. “Not in English.”

I gasp. “Harper Andrews, since when do you understand Russian?”

“Since I dated a Russian ice hockey player. He taught me a few things.”

“Dated?I didn’t know about this.”

“It wasn’t serious. A month or two max, just before graduation.”

That’s a very long time for her. “A month or two max?”

“He was good in bed.” She laughs. “And the Russian he taught me came in handy last night, so points for me. I’m not an expert or anything, and I can’t speak it to save my life, but I picked things up.”

“How do we know you didn’t make a mistake last night and hear the wrong things?”

She rolls her eyes at me. “Because I know I didn’t, and the evidence was there. The man got you a Maybach, girl. And did you see how the doctor or whatever he was took care of you?”

“I did see.” To be honest, it was almost as if everyone who rallied around to look after me was nervous. Nervous in a way that suggested they might be scared.

“Good. Then believe me when I say he didn’t just put some pity package together.”

I think about the possibility. It warms my insides, but then I feel bad again that I didn’t say thanks.

“I think he works at the club,” Harper offers. “Maybe he’s a manager or something along those lines.”

“I was thinking that, too.” It was the way he ordered those guys around, and of course, there was the car and the special treatment.

“Look at you getting the boss’ attention.” She chuckles.

“Or maybe he recognized me as Serenity Bell and knows my father. Maybe that’s what it was.” It would be disappointing if that was the reason.

She shakes her head. “No, that’s not why.”

“How do you know?”

“My woman’s intuition.”

“That’s all you got for me?”

“It’s enough and never let me down yet.” Pride fills her face as if she’s privy to some secret, something no other woman knows but her.

“Whatever his reasons, it was nice of him. And that’s the end of the story.”

Her eyebrows disappear into her hairline. “Really, girl? The end of the story? The man practically devours you with his eyes, then turns out to be your white knight in sexy tattoos, and that's the end of the story?”

She has a point that I don’t want to acknowledge. “What am I supposed to do, Harper?”

“You know what I’d do?”

“Of course. You’d go back to the club to find him.”

“You know me too well.” She laughs. “Maybe you could take a leaf from my book. Just in this instance.”

“I wasn’t really planning on going back to Club X anytime soon.”
