We go over to the sofa and sit opposite each other.

Virgo reaches into the inside pocket of his jacket and takes out some folded sheets of paper.

“These are the emails. Check out the first one.” He hands them to me.

I take them and unfold the paper to read the message.

It says:

Those people in the Zaitsev don’t deserve your hard work. Neither do the Creed. Do what I want and you will be rewarded.

Get Roland Patterson to follow Dante and get whatever he can to send him away. He’ll be as discreet as we need him to be. Tell him I sent you and fill him in on our plans. Report back to me when you set this up.

Z

“Fuck.” I press my hand to my forehead. Seeing the details for myself has a stronger impact than being told.

“We need to focus on tracking Roland down.” Virgo nods. “Once we get to him we’ll hopefully have answers and we can find out who this Z person is. So far, I know Roland operates Downtown, so that’s where we should start looking. The last known location is a pawnshop run by the Italians. We can work on checking the area out today and any of his usual hangouts.”

“Perfect. I’ll get Manuel to do some digging around, too. If Roland finds out I’m asking around for him, it will be obvious I could only be looking for him for one reason.” Manuel is a friend of mine who works for the Diaz Cartel. People don’t know he knows me, which makes him perfect for these sorts of jobs. I’ll get Borya to stay here with Serenity. “Levka can help us with the tracking.” That man can find a pin in a ocean. I have faith that he can help us look for one small-timer.

“Sounds good.” He nods. “What worries me is we still don’t know the reason for all this. I was hoping that would be in the emails but I guess maybe they met in person to discuss those parts so it could never be tracked.”

I bite the inside of my lip to try and tamp down my rage. Although, we have something to work with now but everything is still so vague.

“This is all just shit, Virgo. Shit that shouldn’t be happening.” As if my life wasn’t already hard enough.

“I know.”

“I grew up with that asshole in my home rubbing shoulders with my father so he could climb the ranks of government. This is him spitting in our faces. And Igor is so fucking blind he can’t see.”

“They have a mutually beneficial relationship. That’s all it is. Once you have that between men like them nothing matters, until it does. Taking matters into your own hands was the best thing you could have done.”

“Yeah, because we’d be flying into hell otherwise not knowing what Jason has up his sleeves.” What’s happening now is the very thing I always worried about.

That fucking asshole is a man given power my father and Igor thought they could control. That power has allowed Jason far too many privileges, as evidenced by what he did to me. Now this.

“Having these names means we’re back in business and not just searching through the haystack.” Virgo eyes darken. “If we get answers from Roland, you can put this behind you and move on to the next part of the plan.”

The final phase—killing Jason.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look of terror on Serenity’s face when I confirmed I planned to kill her father.

After the bomb I dropped on her about who he really is, it didn’t surprise me that she understood. But whether she does or not, he’s her father. There’s a love there that exists outside of all of this.

That’s what I need to remember when push comes to shove. She won’t be thinking of the justice I feel I deserve.

“Yes. The next part.” I nod with determination but Serenity flashes through my mind. That final part would probably destroy her. I wish I didn’t care about that.

Virgo gives me a stony glare, swapping back to the mood he was in when he first arrived. “What are you really going to do about her, Dante?”

I shouldn’t be surprised he knew I was thinking about her.

I think of what to say that’s more substantial that telling him I’ll take care of it and I’m still drawing a blank.

“I don’t know yet, but I’ll come up with something. It’s… complicated.” The other day when I said that, I still had the chance to stop the situation from spiraling out of control.

“Complicated again? I think we’re past that don’t you? She’s more than a liability to us now that she knows whatwe’replanning. We as in me and you.” He wags his finger from himself to me. “You know what we usually do withliabilitieswho see and hear what they shouldn’t.”
