“And if we don’t?” Borya asks.

Time is my enemy here. I’m running out of it. I have another two days before I would have ran out completely then I actually don’t fucking know what to do.

“I’ll figure it out. I just need you guys to focus on the things I’ve tasked you with.”

“Of course.”

Borya nods his agreement. “Heading upstairs then.”

“Wait, I’ve taken a different approach today.” After the way Serenity fought back last night I felt I needed to change things up. I need to make things here as easy as possible. “She can come out of the room. I’ve left the door open. That’s as much as I’ll allow. though. No phones, unless anyone has messaged her and she needs to respond.” That’s in case Harper and Miko contact her. They are the main people I’m concerned about. She’s in touch with them pretty much every day.

“That’s fine,” Borya answers. “I’ll stay down here then and get started on some of my paperwork.”

“And I’ll get started on the list we have for today,” Levka adds, with a quick dip of his head.

“Good, we’ll reconvene in a little while. I’ll be ready to head out when Virgo gets here.” He’s on his way.

It’s just gone seven. We wanted to get an early start.

Borya and Levka give me a final nod, then leave.

I finish the rest of my coffee, which now taste terrible because it’s cold.

When I set the mug on the counter I hear the creak of the stairs.

It’s Serenity. She’s the only person up there now.

As I’m going to be away all day again, I should want to talk to her, but I was hoping to be gone before she woke up.

I didn’t want to face her again after last night, or at all. Aside from still feel the shame and sting of guilt for putting her in this situation, I just can’t be around her. It’s too fucking hard to look at her and know she’s not mine anymore.

Moments later she pokes her dark head in, peering around the door, and tenses when her gaze lands on me.

I straighten, watching the change in her breathing from the steady rise and fall of her chest to a cautious jump. From where I am I can see her pulse quickening.

The same way it did last night when I was on top of her.

All I wanted to do last night was fuck her senseless and spend the rest of the night tasting her. I wanted to lick every inch of her body from head to toe and feast on her until sunrise. I had a hard time making my brain believe we weren’t those people anymore.

“Good morning.” I speak first because she seems too stunned to talk.

“Morning.” Her bright eyes take me in with the caution of someone walking on thin ice that’s about to crack. She moves closer, stopping by the island so she’s still a good distance from me. “The room door was open. I didn’t know what it meant.”

“It means you can go around the apartment today. That’s all.”

“Feeling bad about locking me away in your room?” Her gaze sharpens, feeling like poison-tipped daggers, piercing into me.

“No.” It’s a lie. Of course I felt bad, but if I confess to such a thing I’ll be admitting to the depth of her poignant effect on me. “Same rules apply as yesterday. Borya will watch you. Fern will feed you.”

“I see.” She swallows hard and glances down briefly as if she’s looking for something on the floor.

Maybe it’s her strength. Some of the strength and power she used last night to slap me. And shock me, not that I’ve ever considered her weak.

I know she believes that, though.

“I got you some clothes.” I point over to the bag from Neiman Marcus my personal shopper brought by an hour ago.

She looks at it, then back at me. “Shopping this early in the morning?”
