It’s the same thing guys do when they tell you they’ll call and they don’t.

His equivalent was to tell me he’d think about my offer, but this is about my life and my fathers. Two days have almost gone by and I’m still waiting for that answer.

I rest my head against the window pane and gaze out at the shadows across the city taunting me.

Finally it’s raining. That’s better. It suits my mood and the shit that’s happening to me.

Another hour passes before the creak of the steps pierces into the silence that’s settled over the house.

The moment the sound of heavy boots connect with the floor on the landing I know it’s him.

He’s back.

He’s back and heading here. What does that mean for me?

I’ve left the door open purposely.

He appears seconds later with his hair damp from the rain and his face wet.

At the sight of him I stand and stare back at him completely unsure of what he's going to say.

I can never tell with him. In this case good news would still be bad and bad news would be devastating.

I hate that this control he has over me and what will happen next in my life.

Dante steps forward but still keeps his distance. He sighs heavily and I wait, feeling as anxious as a game show contestant who’s just risked the million they previously won to answer more questions with the hope of winning more.

“I've thought about your offer,” he states, continuing to stare me down.

The prolonged seconds of more waiting send every single nerve in my body into overdrive.

“And,” I prod. I don't mean to sound as insistent as I do, but come on. I think anyone would in my shoes.

“I accept your offer, Serenity Bell.”

My mouth drops in shock and a flood of relief flows through me at such an intensity my knees almost give.

My heart beat speeds up and my brain suddenly feels like it's been awoken as I process what he’s really is saying to me.

He accepts. That means he's not going to kill my father.

“You really accept?” I check.

“Yes.” He bites down hard on his back teeth. “But I have terms and conditions that must absolutely be met.”

This is the part I’ll need to worry about. But whatever it is I’m accepting. “What are they?”

“Your father is to go to prison,” he begins. “It will be for life. I have evidence against him organizing the murder the Whitmore family.”

My heart squeezes on hearing that.Dad, I can’t believe this is you. I can’t even believe this is all about you.

“Is that clear?” Dante studies my face.

“Yes. It's clear.” Prison for life is certainly better than death.

“You'll leave here tomorrow afternoon and act like you've been in New York this whole time as you planned. You are not to tell anyone what happened to you and you're not to tell anyone about my plans.”

“I can do that, definitely.”
