“Yes.”

“I know that, but yet I couldn’t tell you the truth.”

“The truth? What truth?”

He laughs off key. Not a good sign. “Good question, since I told so many lies. Especially to her.”

The ‘her’ he’s talking about is Olivia.

“What lies did you tell her?” I keep my eyes on his.

“She saw Amelia and me together. Her very best friend in all the world, naked and pressed up against me in my bedroom, kissing me. When confronted me about it, I allowed her to believe I was cheating on her.”

I give him a narrowed stare. He’s sharing pieces of the missing puzzle, but it still doesn’t make any sense.

“Where you?”

“No.” He places his hand to his head. “Amelia threw herself at me but I stopped things from going further. Olivia didn’t see that part and I took advantage of the situation because my father told me to stop seeing her. What I’ve never told you is that he blackmailed me. ”

My eyes snap wide. Virgo’s father is a ruthless motherfucker, but I never imagined he could do something like that to his own son.

“What? What did he have on you?”

“Evidence that I killed Raphael Donachie.”

I straighten up so quickly my spine almost snaps.

Raphael Donachie was a high level black market dealer used by the Creed for his skills and contacts in the criminal underground. Everyone thinks he killed himself.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?” Virgo wouldn’t kill a man like that without having a damn good reason.

“He raped my sister.”

Fucking hell.Piper is the youngest of them by six years. Virgo has always taken his big brother duties as seriously as his responsibilities in the Bratva, so I shouldn’t really be surprised that he applied the same laws of retribution.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“The less people who knew the better. But in the end it didn’t matter because I slipped up. My recklessness got the better of me.”

As he says that I think back to a few weeks ago when we were taking about being reckless. He’d said recklessness is a tool men like us sometimes rely on. Now I’m seeing there was more to his words that what was on the surface.

“My father had footage of me shooting Raphael and threatened me despite my reasons for doing what I did.” He slumps into the chair. “If I didn’t agree to stop seeing Olivia, he would have exposed me and he threatened to marry Piper off to one of his fucktard business associates who were at least three times her age, instead of the man she actually loved. I knew being exposed meant death, but I couldn’t allow him to sign my sisters life away to more misery.”

“Jesus, Virgo. I can’t believe all that happened.”

“Me too. Olivia and her parents disappeared two days after we broke up. At first I thought my father did something but I don’t think so.”

“What makes you think he didn’t?”

“I don’t know. Just a feeling I have. I think something else happened. I think they were in trouble and they fled. But those are just thoughts.” His brows knit as if he’s still in contemplation. “My father is one nasty piece of work. Just when I think he can’t surprise me anymore he proves me wrong. He blackmailed me to control me. Because of his fallout with Olivia’s family he didn’t want me to be with her. I… didn’t know how real it was between Olivia and me until I lost her. I was going to ask her to marry me.”

Their relationship was such a secret that I didn’t know it was so serious. “I don’t know what the hell to say.”

“I wouldn’t know what to say to me either.” He sighs and swipes a weary hand through his tousled hair. “Now I just want know what the hell happened. It’s been nearly two years.”
