At least the sun has been up for a few hours now. A new day has dawned.

One I know I must seize. I can’t allow myself another day like yesterday. I needed that break again. Time away from the real world to escape into a fantasy with the goddess. My Juliet.

Jesus, listen to me.

And yet, I like this feeling she gives me of the possibility.

The conversation we had last night was intense. It’s one I’ve been purposely avoiding. The subject of what we are has been brewing on the horizon since the night we met.

Like most things with her, when she called me her forbidden Romeo it did something to me I never expected and I gave in to the possibility that maybe we could have this.

Then all night I wondered how I could make that possible.

Being with her is beautiful and a chance men like me don’t often get. Looking at her asleep in her bed is soothes the beast inside me. So does being with her.

She’s everything.

But we’re not okay.

We won’t be anything close to okay until I fix the shit that’s happening on the outside. Every day that passes agitates me more and more. I feel like I’m moving further away from my goal. That’s why I can’t even begin to think of a future when my present life is in shambles.

The buzzing of my phone pulls me from my thoughts. When I pick it up and see Virgo’s name flashing across the screen I hope he has something solid to tell me. The fact that he’s calling this early gives me hope.

I get up from the chair by the window and make my way out into the hallway to answer the call.

“Hey,” I say.

“Where are you?”

“Serenity’s place.”

“Where are your men?” There’s an edge to his voice that spikes my nerves.

“Not with me.”

“I need you to go somewhere you can talk in private.”

That sounds serious.

“Give me a minute.” I head out to the sunroom. “I’m good to talk now. What’s going on Virgo?”

“Roland’s dead. We found him an hour ago.”

The warmth in my blood is replaces by ice and I ball my hand into a fist. “Dead?”

“He was murdered. We managed to track him down to an apartment on the south side. When we got there his throat was slashed. He couldn’t have been dead for more than an hour which was the same time I found him and went out with the men. I didn’t call you because I wanted to jump on it.”

“That’s fine. It’s fucking suspicious that he was dead within the same time frame that you located him.”

“Yeah and that’s the other problem. I found some sophisticate spyware on my systems. Someone has been watching us, Dante. At least for a few weeks.”

Fuck.“So they know?”

“Yeah. I’m sure they’ve been following our movements this whole time. Dante, I think it’s one of your guys.”

My skin tightens then covers in goosebumps. “My guys? What makes you think that.”

“It’s not one of mine. I’ve checked mine out and they were with me at the club. Trust me, friend. It’s one of your guys. I don’t know who, but it’s got to be. They didn’t want us to find Roland. My guess is this Z person really wants to keep himself hidden.”
