According to all the evil he’s done, it should have been. The stuff Dante told me was nothing compared to what was leaked to the media.

All of it to get power to become governor. But really, Dad acted like a god.

“Serenity. I wasn’t sure you’d come to see me again today.” He searches my eyes when I walk closer.

“I thought I should. Tomorrow’s the big day, right?”

“I guess so.” His voice sounds hollow.

During the time he’s been recovering, we haven’t had that heart-to-heart I’ve been expecting where he would tell me why he did what he did. I didn’t come here for it today, and I don’t expect to get it at all. I’ve come to accept that some things I’m better off not knowing.

I’m not sure what he could say to me to explain himself, anyway.

I pull up the chair opposite him and sit. “I just saw Melissa. She looked pissed.”

“She’s filing for divorce.”

Wow.I can’t say I’m surprised. “Can you blame her?”

“No.”

“I’m sure she’ll still have her money for her face and her fancy trips to Europe.”

I’m surprised when he chuckles.

“Not so much.”

“What happened? The government isn’t seizing your assets, are they?” As far as I’m aware, my father didn’t commit any financial crimes that would warrant that sort of punishment, but for all I know, maybe the assets can be seized anyway because of who he is. Correction: who hewas.

“They’re not. I’ve, um…given everything to you, including the house.”

My mouth drops, and I’m not sure how it doesn’t hit the ground. “What? What do you mean?”

“Melissa and I have a prenup.”

I’m shocked further. I never knew that. “So, she and Natalie get nothing?”

“I still have a heart. I’ve left them each enough to take care of themselves for a year, but it’s nothing to shout about. Everything else is yours to do as you wish.”

“Why did you do that?”

He sighs and sets his shoulders back. “I married Melissa because of her background. The family she came from made me more likely to climb the ranks of government. She married me for my money, so I wasn’t about to give her my fortune when I have a daughter who could use it more wisely.” He looks down at his hands for a moment, then back at me. “I won’t act like I didn’t want us all to be a family. I did. And I tried, even though I knew it was unlikely we’d ever have what I had with you and your mother.”

“I never knew you felt that way.”

“How would you when I forced you to conform? I guess I really lost my way. I lost my way long before your mother died, and when she left my world, I didn’t know who I was anymore.” He sounds like the father I used to know.

“Did Mom know about the Bratva?”

He shakes his head. “I kept it from her. Back then, it was just a favor here and there.”

“Melissa knew, though, didn’t she?”

“She did.”

“Why did you do such horrible things, Dad? How could you sanction murdering innocent people?Children?”

“I have no words for that. And it seems death was too good for me. The worst punishment I can receive is this. Life imprisonment with no hope of parole. I lost everything, including watching you grow into the next phase of your life.” He reaches across the table, picks up an envelope, and hands it to me.
