“Are you in the Russian Mafia?” I rasp out.

“Yes.”

As hard as I try there’s no way I can control my heartbeat from kicking up a notch on hearing that confirmation. But there’s more I need to ask.

“What are you to them?” I glance at the stars on his shoulder. “Those stars mean something. Don’t they?”

“They do. I’m the second in command to the Pakhan, who is my uncle. He’s the leader of the Zaitsev Bratva.”

Second in command to the Pakhan…

Leader…

Bratva…

My God…when I first thought I was in over my head that was only the beginning of my worries.

He’s a freaking Russian mob boss, so yeah, I’ve pretty much just gone and gotten myself mixed up with one of the most dangerous men ever.

The dryness in my throat spreads to my lungs and turns to ice when I think of what he could have been in prison for. At first I thought it couldn’t be that bad because the sentence was short. Now I’m not so sure, and I dare not ask.

“Are you afraid of me, Printsessa?” He inclines his head, deepening the stare.

“I…um.” I’m trembling from the inside out. Yes I’m afraid, but is it a good idea to confess that? Even I know it’s not.

He breaks into the haze of fear by moving our cups of coffee to the counter top beside us. Then he reaches for me, secures his strong hands to my waist and lifts me onto the table.

He steps in between my legs and leans in closer as if he’s going to tell me a secret or kiss me. Then he places his hands on the table on either side of me, so I’m blocked in and his lips are breaths away from mine.

“You don’t have to be afraid of me.” He speaks in a lower voice. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“I… just haven’t met anyone like you before.”

He gives me another full smile, but there’s no humor to this one. “I guess you can see now why a devil like me shouldn’t be anywhere near the governor’s daughter.” He comes to my ear and his warm breath whispers over my skin like a gentle caress of a lover. I feel him everywhere. In every nerve, every pore, every pulse. “Corrupting her and tainting her innocence over and over the way I did. Still want me Printsessa, or is it red yet?”

Red.I should have probably said red a long time ago, but I’ve kept my silence.

And damn me, I'm still prompted to do the same thing now.

“It’s not red.” I hear myself say in a whispered hush.

Our eyes meet with the force of all the magnetism from last night and I feel everything that drew me to him holding me still so I can stare into his soul.

“Then it looks like we have quite a big problem on our hands, especially since I know I can’t leave you alone even if you ask me to.”

His words send an arrow of undiluted desire straight to my core and suddenly it doesn’t matter what he is.

Staring into his eyes, I chance reaching out to touch him, touch the tight muscle over his right pec, touch the light pulse of his heart beat and feel it beneath my fingertips. Dante covers my hand with his and brings it up to his lips to kiss.

“You still want me?” I mutter.

“I never stopped.” The light of fascination dances in his eyes. He comes closer and brushes his firm full, sexy lips over mine, back and forth and back and forth, teasing me, creating a maelstrom of desire in the pit of my core. “Take away the Bratva, the tattoos and all their meanings and I’m just a guy who can’t get you out of his head, Serenity. I’m the guy who will treat you like the goddess you are, and worship every inch of your body. I’m the guy who would die first before hurting you, and I’d always protect you with my life.”

Those words work into every cell of my brain, selling me everything I could possibly want in a man.

Lost in him, I press my lips to his. Then his kiss becomes a savage demand for my soul.

I get that feeling again, like he wants to take everything inside me. Like he’s trying to crawl into my soul and still keep going until he’s reached my essence and has all that makes me, me.
