“Aurora.” His voice breaks with her name, and Kieran’s back stiffens. “Don’t be scared. I will come after you.”

When Hayden turns around, Kieran has his gun pointed at his head. “Any last wishes?”

“I don’t have fucking time for this. You want her back as much as I do. We’ll continue this discussion afterward.”

“If something happens to them, I will hunt you down,” I vow.

We bolt through the office door and straight to the elevator that barely holds all the contained tension and suppressed aggressiveness.

In the jet, Cameron, who has been silent, eyes Hayden quizzically, who’s on his phone, getting his men ready.

“I have her,” Kieran says, referring to Aurora, and I can breathe a sigh of relief.

“You’re not our fucking uncle and definitely not my fucking half-brother,” Cameron says, and Hayden looks him straight in the eye.

“Are you sure?”

“Start talking,” Kieran says, fingers tapping on the gun.

“We can have this conversation after we get them back safely. We will find her.”

Kieran rakes a hand through his hair. “Why does she trust you so much? Buying into all your bullshit?”

“You should ask her that.”

We all fall silent, likely preparing for what’s to come.

When we land, Hayden goes toward a car and says, “I have to look after someone.”

“I’m coming with you.” I have to see for myself that Chiara is unharmed.

We separate: Kieran and Cameron in one vehicle. Me and Hayden in a different Jeep, speeding away.

“Do not make me kill you. Chiara is under my protection.”

“You did a shit job of that.”

His hands grip the wheel, speeding away. With my heart in my throat, I try to calm my frayed nerves. She’s okay. She has to be.

Chapter 27

After I make the deal with Cato, I burst into hysterical laughter, but all I can feel is relief.

“All this for nothing.”

“You can back off,” Aurora says with an encouraging nod.

“Oh, you don’t make a deal with the devil and expect anything less than giving up your soul away.”

“I don’t know if I should thank you or be mad at you.”

It’s the least I could do. When I saw her crying and worried for Hayden’s life, it twisted my heart. If Kieran wouldn’t listen, I knew Cato would. And now he has me. I gave myself to him. And if I am being honest, I already have been, but this time, it’s of my own volition, even if it’s wrapped in a deal.

With elbows looped together, we go outside.

“We’re going to leave in three hours,” a guard says, and we nod.

“What about that woman? I haven’t seen her out of the building.”
