Tears well up in my eyes. “He hates me now.”

“He feels too much and can’t compartmentalize at the moment.”

“I love him.”

“A bit too late, don’t you think?”

“Do you think he would be happy with someone else?”

“He’ll settle.”

Cameron stands up and leaves me to my agony.

Just a few days ago we made love, now there is just sorrow.

I lose track of time, but after the fifth person tells me to go eat, I scramble to my feet and find another place, behind a bush. I hide like a coward. Badass, my ass. I just have the attitude, but on the inside, I am a damn coward.

Cato approaches, shrouded in a cloud of anger. “If I have to force you to eat, I will.”

“This is where it happened.”

“Feeling sorry for yourself?”

“Cato.”

“Come eat, don’t make me come for you again.”

“I’m not hungry.”

He cracks his neck and takes a step toward me, while I straighten my shoulders.

“Three.”

“You can count to fucking one hundred.”

“Two.”

Why does it excite me? All my instincts shout at me to run, but I force myself to stay put.

“One. You always like doing things the hard way.”

I yelp as he tosses me over his shoulder, and I pound on his back.

In the house, forks clatter on the dishes, and he puts me down.

“She’s difficult.”

I flip him off as he thrusts me into a chair.

I take a few bites and place the fork down.

“Eat, all of it.”

“Fuck you, asshole.”

It’s as if I reawakened from a coma. Fuck him, and fuck him twice for not believing me, and fuck him three times for being able to put us behind him and start a new life.

Hayden, Cameron, and the girls burst into laughter. I shove the chair back and fly through the door.
