A yawn escapes my lips, and he presses me to him. “I don’t want to fall asleep.”

“I will come back. I swear.”

I gulp down my fears, the anguish, the uncertainty, and nod. Believing. Hoping. Dreaming.

“I have to go,” he whispers above my lips, and I scoot up, wiping the last remnants of sleep away.

“Sleep for a while longer.”

“I love you.”

Strange how we ended our war now that others want to bring us to the brink of another.

He kisses my forehead, my eyelids, then my mouth, where he lingers for a while.

“I love you,vita mia.”

I cup his face, brushing my nose against his. “My dream brought us back together.”

“Our love brought us back together. That dream was just a very nice incentive.”

He winks at me and looks one more time over his shoulder.

“If you don’t come back, I am going to kill you.”

“Do that, because if I can’t come back, I am a dead man anyway.”

It’s too damn quiet, and I sob into his pillow, everything in me knows he’s gone.

Aurora and Alessandra burst through the door, and Aurora grabs my hand and pulls me up.

“Stop sulking and go change already. We’re going shopping.”

She is already in the walk-in closet, looking for something for me to wear, when I look at Alessandra and say, “Shouldn’t you be at the hospital?”

She peers out the window with a pensive look. “It’s my day off.”

“What are you keeping from me?”

But Aurora returns and throws a pair of jeans and a top at my head. “And take a shower. It smells like a sex cave in here.”

“You’d know, wouldn’t you?”

It’s in the red flooding her cheeks and her eyes widening.

“Come on, tell me everything.”

She zips her mouth.

I shake my head at her and take a shower.

I find them in the living room, and we stride outside, ignoring the number of guards flanking us.

“You don’t seem to mind it anymore.”

“When I chose him, I chose this life, too.”
