“That was the highlight of my day.”

In the car, after the amusement fades, he says, “What if they don’t take the offer?”

Then all parties will face losses. And if I learned something from their files, it’s that they are businessmen first and men second.

“They will take it.”

“You forced their hand.”

“They shouldn’t have put a hit on me.” I nod and rub my temples.

Hayden sits in silence for a moment before letting out a low whistle. “That woman of yours is something.”

At the reminder, I smile, forgetting everything for a while. “Yes, she is.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Love her the way she is. I’ll learn to live with the headache.”

“Fucker.”

“Better a headache than not having her in my life.”

“Taking into consideration the fact that you’re neck deep in shit.”

“You’re the one talking?”

“This has nothing to do with Alessandra.” Hayden fists his hands on his knees.

“Take her or leave her, but the limbo is not worth it.”

He nods with a pensive expression, and the driver halts the car in front of my villa.

A few more hours. I shove the ticking clock to the back of my mind. Changing into swimming trunks, I dive in the pool, doing laps until my muscles strain.

On the chaise lounge, I sip from my drink.

Hayden joins me. “Good that you’re working on your tan.”

“I have the plan in here.” I point at my temple.

He gulps his drink down, and it doesn’t escape me that both of us attempt to appear more settled than we are.

It could go a hundred ways to hell.

I go through each scenario, and since my first kill, all I’ve ever thought whenever I couldn’t sleep was how I am going to die. This seems like a worthy death, fighting against the oldest criminal organization in the world. I shake my head. I am not leaving my wife. Knowing her, she would curse me back to life.

I grin and shower. For someone walking a fine line, I spend more time thinking about Chiara and how I will worship every inch of her, love her the way she needs to be loved—all-consuming, fiery, hard. But first I need to come out alive.

I pick up my phone and FaceTime her.

“Hi, little troublemaker.”

Her giggles mix with cries, and my heart constricts in my chest. “Don’t cry, vita mia.”

Those eyes I am so lost in set on me, and she wipes her tears away.

“It’s true. You’re too stubborn to die, and if you do, I am getting myself a new husband by the end of the day.”
