“And I will choose what I can’t live without.”

He leaves, and I say to his back, “Wrong decision, enjoy your misery.”

“Why didn’t you take care of Luciana?” Kieran asks when it’s just the three of us.

“She’s a trapped mouse. I want to humiliate her. She thought for years she was untouchable. She’ll come for me and only afterward will Enzo get her. But first, I’ll have my fun.”

I find my wife and smile, approaching her. “Ready to go?”

She nods and hugs every one of them, even Kieran. She chose this as her family and won’t have it any other way. She might have a hard appearance, but inside, she is soft, the perfect woman, the perfect queen.

In the car, she looks around.

“No guards?”

“None. We’ll be flying incognito.”

“Can we do that more often?”

Her happiness is infectious, and I nod. What I wouldn’t do to get her to smile.

Wrapping her arm around my own, Chiara leans her cheek on my shoulder. “I’m happy.”

“Good, let’s keep you that way.”

In the jet, the longest minutes end when the pilot announces that we can take off our seat belts. She straddles my lap and kisses me, her fingers brushing against my chest.

“It’s yours, entirely yours. You have me, all of me.” I tilt her chin up to me. “I’m here to stay, here to build a life, here to grow old with you.”

“You better.”

“Loving you scared me in the beginning, but now it terrifies me, Cato.”

I wish I could kill her fears; it would be the sweetest kill of my life.

“I want you to be safe, it doesn’t make sense for me any other way.”

Tucking her to my side, I caress her head, and she relaxes in my arms.

I want her to be happy all the time. I forget how young she is, how young I am. Most of the time, I think one year equals two in our world, everything making us older and wearier in this life.

“What are you thinking about?”

I smile, curiosity ringing in her voice.

“That I’m happy.”

She smiles brightly, pleased with my answer.

So, this is what happiness feels like, peace settling inside you and allowing you to just be and enjoy the here and now.

I grab her hand and drag her to the back of the jet.

“Now, let’s introduce you properly to the mile high club.”

Chapter 45

My heart speeds up whenever he looks at me like in this moment, lost in me, like I am his entire world. That’s a potent thing. We came so far, and still, the fear of losing him is never far from my mind. I didn’t lie, I don’t want to hide either. It exhausted me, not to say we could have avoided some hurdles if I just gave in to this mad and magnetic pull between us.
