With the sun lowering over the tips of the trees, we go inside the house and take the grand staircase upstairs.

In the spacious bedroom, while she undresses and showers, I take off my shoes and dig my feet into the plush carpet. I plop onto the white queen-sized bed, thinking about everything that happened in the past hour. I know I have to apologize for my behavior, starting with Tamara. Pushing myself off the bed, I go downstairs. I find her in the wide kitchen overlooking the forest. She stiffens when she sees me. “I’m sorry.”

“Apology accepted. Do you want something to drink, dear? Aurora says I make the best lemonade.” It’s clear how much she cares about my best friend.

“You’re a fighter, aren’t you?” she asks, extending her arm with the glass of lemonade.

I take a small sip. “I can’t be anything else if I become the wife of a savage. And thank you.”

With that, I return to the bedroom. I am in bed when Aurora comes out of the shower.

“This is not how I imagined my wedding night.”

“Shut up, I am going to give you the best wedding night ever,” I say with a small smile that she returns.

She climbs in bed next to me, propping an elbow on the mattress, her cheek in her palm. “It’s okay to be afraid.”

“I am not afraid. I just hate my incapacity to do anything about it.”

She nods in understanding.

“I can’t believe your father would have sold you . . .”

“I can’t believe your father accepted that you’ll stay here with me for tonight.”

“I lied. And I am scared now. That man convinced my father. No one ever could . . .” My voice trembles, and I hate these small signs of vulnerability when I want to be made of steel.

The silence falls around us, as thick as the walls of the prison neither of us can escape.

The next day, we find all three guys seated around the breakfast table. We sit down in silence. Aurora is next to Kieran, and I’m seated next to Cato. So, of course, my already precarious mood threatens to plummet.

Cato bends over me, and that sinful mouth of his parts into a smirk.

“I fucking like you next to me.”

Swallowing, I hold his intense gaze. I squirm in my chair, my body temperature one degree from boiling over. I must have caught something. That has to be it.

“Enjoy this rare occasion.”

“I love how you provoke me. Keep it up, it makes me hard.”

“Then you must have a microscopic dick.”

One moment I am sitting down, the next, I yelp as Cato lifts and throws me over his shoulder.

“He can’t do that,” Aurora gasps.

“She’s his fiancée.”

“Kieran.”

“Aurora.”

Cameron winks at me, while I hang upside down with Cato’s palm splayed over my ass. At least Cato and Kieran don’t hide their evil. Cameron is the most dangerous predator in their group, hiding behind his alluring charm.

I pound on Cato’s back on the way out. “Put me down.”

“On your knees?”
