Genuine curiosity stares back at me. For a second, I believe he wants to make things work between us. “Why do you assume your life with me will be a prison?”

We remain in stilted silence for a while.

He throws his head back and laughs. Those deep sounds reverberate through the room, and I press my hand on his mouth. I don’t know what will happen if my father finds him here. Cato peels my hand away, holding mine in his with so much gentleness, playing at my heartstrings.
His eyes on me makes me hot all over.
