Page 81 of Sinner's Perdition

The chef comes and greets us. When we’re alone, Cato asks, “Why?”

I wondered how long it would take for him to ask the question.

I open my mouth, various lies already rolling to the tip of my tongue, but I say, “Even in battles, you can call an occasional cease fire.”

Cato chuckles and his deep, rich voice sets low in my belly.

He raises the glass, winking at me. “And who do you think will win in the end?”

His playfulness ignites mine, and I twirl a strand of my hair. “Me, of course.”

“Of course, huh?”

Over the rim of his glass, he scrutinizes me with intent, before setting it down. “I would fuck you right here and now.”

Heat pools between my legs. He’s so crass.

“It’s the scenery, right?”

He bursts into laughter, compelling me to stay trapped in this moment.

“Tell me about you.”

I trail a finger around the rim of my glass. “Husband, shouldn’t you have known all there is about me before we got married?”

“What can I say, I like to live on the edge.”

His affirmation sets worry into motion. It’s so often I catch a certain recklessness in him, and also a total lack of respect for life.

My brow furrows. “Why?”

“My life,cara. . .”

“No, no, I want full answers. I don’t want to drag them from you.”

“Total sincerity?”

“Total.”

He drags a hand through his hair. “With every life I take, either by my hands or by a hit, I lose the respect for life. It’s too fragile, and my time will come as well. You don’t live like me expecting redemption.”

I grip the glass with trembling fingers, fear assaulting me. “Then why drag me into it?”

“Afraid for me or for yourself?”

“Cato.”

“Of course, I knew who you were. Your father couldn’t hide you from me. Only you could get in so much trouble in an all-girls school.”

A smile grazes the corners of my mouth, but he won’t distract me. I know there is more. “I’m waiting.”

“Fine. Here’s to sincerity. When you lead the life I do, you don’t expect to get old.”

My heart thumps in my chest, a merciless panic-filled beat.

“But until then, you’re mine.”

He raises the glass in a toast, and I wish I could smash it in his face.
