“And you left me here?”

“I thought you wanted your freedom and to be on your own. Enjoy the fucking weekend.”

I pinch my nose.

“What? Don’t you like how fucking selfless I am?”

And this man, in his fucked-up way, tries to make me see he actually would do anything for me.

“Fine by me.”

I hang up and drag my knees to my chest.

Great, one weekend by myself by the sea. This couldn’t get better.

Chapter 24

I drive straight to the compound, my nerves still strained. The ongoing battle to win over my own wife is taking a toll on me. I slam the door shut and go into the conference room. Kieran and Cameron are there talking with my cousin and brother.

“I’m going after Sergio.”

I need something, anything, to distract me from going back to her and showing her for the umpteenth time she should stop lying to herself. That woman is mine.

“No,” all four of them say in unison, their eyes set on me. I ball my fists at my sides, cracking my neck.

“Two against one, suck it up,” Cameron reminds me.

When Marco and Dario leave, I plop on my chair, and Kieran studies a photo of Hayden, who turned out to be the mysterious guy Aurora was talking to. Not only that but she’s convinced he is her uncle. And of course, my best friend is on edge.

“My wife, my incredible, too-good-of-a-person wife really believes the fucker is her uncle.”

“But Cameron—”

“She doesn’t want to believe us, and it’s driving me fucking crazy.”

“That man has a death wish.” And I am so pumped up to deliver.

“We can’t, not yet.”

Aurora must have her teeth in Kieran’s balls, and every time he even thinks of doing something to her ‘uncle,’ she bites down.

“Where is your lovely wife?” Kieran asks.

The irony is not lost on me. “I believe Slith is warmer toward me and he’s a damn snake.”

They burst into laughter. Best friends, my ass.

The talk ends, and Kieran pours whiskey in three glasses.

“My father still thinks he’s in control. The fool.” Cameron’s victorious grin glows in the dim office light.

“Even better. He will be forced to relinquish it to you after Friday night.”

Both he and Kieran clink their glasses. I am glad my best friends will finally get the revenge they have wanted. They each lost a parent at Silas’ command.

“I’m out.”

Kieran smiles. Have I ever seen my best friend happy, relaxed, in love? No. I rise to my feet and clap his shoulder. “Aurora’s good for you.”
