He sets his eyes on me, narrowing them.

“You’re not good for Cato.”

His words are like a slap in the face, but I force the tears back down.

“Stop messing with him.”

He leaves, striding to them. Aurora stands between the two, and Kieran relaxes when she nears him. Doesn’t he know what she gave up for him?

I step back inside to freshen up in the bathroom.

When I return to our table, our group is in deep conversation, and Kieran has his arms around Aurora.

They clink their glasses, all three of them wearing satisfied grins, and I find out why. Both Silas and Delaney are broke and done for life with the blackmailing material they have on them.

Aurora and Kieran dance, and Cameron is off charming a group of people who appear to be eating out of his palm. My eyes find Cato’s, and they are filled with stark emotions.

When the night ends, I struggle to keep my eyes open when we get in the car. With every mile we travel out of the city toward Kieran and Aurora’s house for the weekend, the clock ticks heavy in my heart. It shouldn’t be this hard leaving you, I think to myself. Still, it feels like someone ripped my heart from my chest.

Once we arrive, Aurora shows me to a guest room.

“I’ve seen the way you look at him,” I say, not even knowing at what I hint.

She sighs.

“Chiara. . .”

I lean my hand on the window, peering outside––torn and lost.

“None of them are good men.” Who am I trying to convince here?

“Yes, but the man he is to me is good.”

“So, you forget everything else he does? How convenient.” I squeeze my eyes shut. I am the worst friend possible, the worst wife possible.

She approaches me, and I quickly wipe at my tears.

“I am not forgetting, but my husband is a product of his circumstances, like everyone else.”

“You really love him?”

She nods and asks in a small voice, “How is Cato treating you?”

Too many emotions ignite inside me.

“I am tired...”

“I love you. You’re my best friend and that will never change.”

I hug her. “I can’t live like this.”

“Tell me how to help you?”

“Would you?”

“Of course, but if part of you can give this a chance, take it first.”
