She was just about to try a new tactic with her beast when someone knocked. Violet’s voice drifted through the door. “Percy, can I come in?”

Sighing, she rubbed her face. “Why?”

Violet paused and finally replied, “Because you have new visitors. And Bram wants you to meet with them.”

Percy had been lucky—ever since Nikki’s visit and how it’d sent her scurrying, no one apart from the doctors or nurses had stopped by.

She wanted to tell them to fuck off. And yet, Bram had provided all sorts of textbooks, clothing, and even a tablet preloaded with books and movies. She didn’t have internet privileges yet—they were probably still trying to figure out if she was a threat—but she didn’t care about that.

Since she owed the clan leader everything, she said, “Okay. I’m coming.”

After quickly rearranging her hair to cover the side of her neck and hide her birthmark, she tugged her long sleeves down out of habit and opened the door.

Violet smiled at her. “I think you’ll like the visitors today. One of them has loads in common with you.”

She froze. “It’s not one of the other prisoners, is it?”

Because she didn’t want to see them. One, in particular, she had been forced to treat badly. And to stay alive, she’d done as she was told. Although, given how the dragonman had been catatonic from some sort of drug concoction for nearly a year, she doubted it’d be him.

Violet shook her head. “No, one of them isn’t even from Stonefire. Come on.”

The teenager walked down the hall, and Percy followed, taking a few steadying breaths. This would be good practice for her, after all, for when she finally could fly away and meet other dragon-shifters.

She reinforced her mental walls during the walk, so by the time she entered the living room, she could keep the surprise from her face.

A tall dragonman with dark hair stood with his arms crossed, leaning against the mantel. Next to him was an olive-skinned dragonwoman not much older than Percy, with short brown hair and flashing dragon eyes.

The female smiled at her. “Hello, you must be Percy.”

She bobbed her head.

The dragonwoman placed a hand on the dragonman’s upper arm, rubbing it as she said, “This is Killian O’Shea, my mate. And I’m Brenna.”

“Okay,” Percy said slowly, wondering if that was supposed to mean anything.

Killian watched her closely, his pupils flashing a few times. The corner of his mouth ticked up at one point, but then he went back to his stony face.

Brenna patted Killian’s arm lightly before stepping away. “Since my mate is being his usual silent self in public, let me explain.”

Killian reached out to swat her arse lightly, and Brenna stuck out her tongue. He grunted. “I’m trying not to be intimidating, lass. There’s a difference.”

His accent was different, one Percy didn’t think she’d ever heard before.

And as the two teased each other, the sight made her heart squeeze. Wanting to avoid yet another happy couple—Stonefire seemed full of them, for some reason—she blurted, “Why are you here, exactly? I’m very busy.”

After one last light shove of her mate, Brenna faced her and answered, “Well, we heard you’ve had problems with your dragon. And before you get upset, there’s a reason Dr. Sid reached out to us.” She gestured at Killian. “Killian’s dragon went silent at one point. In fact, he even lost his memory for a while. And when his beast did come back, there was a surprise as a result of the drugs they’d given him. Dr. Sid thought it might be helpful for you to ask Killian some questions, since he understands better than most of us what you’re experiencing right now.”

Percy studied the dragonman, and he studied her right back. “What kind of surprise?”

He stood up from the mantel. “I have a two-headed dragon, maybe one of the only ones to ever exist.”

Her mouth dropped a second. “Two-headed?”

Killian shrugged. “It’s bloody noisy in my head sometimes, aye. But now, it’s just my new normal. And that might not happen to you, but there might be some things that I experienced that could help you. If you want to chat or ask me anything, then go ahead.”

Part of her wanted to just fire away questions, and yet, she didn’t know the dragonman at all.

Looking around the room, she noticed Violet nearby but not Bronx. Before she could think of it, she blurted, “Where’s Bronx?”
