“You are going to have a child. What choice do you have if you want the kid to be safe from Marcello?”

My gaze shot up to find his. He had already tracked down our doctor visits at the hospital.

Fuck.

“If you have time, you can speak to my boss in person for more details. I can arrange it.”

“I don’t have time for that.”

“Then you'll have to trust me. You will get your pardon... Just take care of Elijah Redcliff.” Murphy suddenly brushed his pants off with his hands. “I’ll be in the city for the next three days. I trust you’ll give me an answer by then.”

“I will.”

He stretched his hand out for a handshake. I shook it firmly. "You can find me at the embassy. Later.”

I watched as he walked back to the car and got in. Moments later, he was gone.

Elise came out of the house and stood in front of me. “How did it go?” she asked.

“We... have a deal.” I ran my hand through my hair, trying to process everything. But Elise stared at me in disagreement with the whole thing.

“Come here,” I said, putting my arms around her as we headed back inside.

We sat on the couch, and I rubbed her hand. “I’ve already made my decision.”

She leaned closer and hugged me. “And I support it. I just wish you didn’t have to leave us.”

I traced my finger along her thigh and nodded. I missed the warmth of her body already, but I would die to protect her and the baby.

Because without them, I was dead anyway.

Chapter 19

Three days later

Elise

Ispent the last three days holding onto every moment we had together. I wanted to help pack his bags, but he said he wouldn’t need more than one of his laptops and a few clothes.

According to Andrei, a private jet would fly him to New York the following morning. If everything went according to plan, Andrei would be back withing a few days, tops. But I was worried. How could I not be?

That last night as we lay on the couch watching TV, I curled up in his arms, trying hard not to panic. I wrapped my hands around his waist and laid my head on his chest, taking in as much of his smell as I could. I tried to keep my heart from jumping out of my chest. Too much worry could do that to anyone.

Andrei shook his head at a joke on the television.

“How can you be so calm?” I asked.

He looked down at me. “Because I need to be. One of us has to act like this is normal. It’s easier that way,” he said and rubbed my hair with his fingers.

“So… should I be worried after three days or a week?” I asked, clearly disliking all of this.

He shook his head. “I won’t give you any reason to worry. Once I finish the job, I’ll call you immediately. You don’t have to worry.”

He held my shoulders and squeezed them gently. I kissed him, and the kiss turned into cuddling, touching, more touching, and… sex.

The next day, Luck Murphy and a woman arrived in an SUV to pick up Andrei. He and I sat in the rear seat, holding hands. He had his backpack on his lap, and when I looked into his eyes, I tried not to cry.

Goodbyes were always difficult, and in this case, it almost killed me on the spot. I just loved him too much.
