Me: Where are you? I want to see you.

Ridge: Come find me.

I stand up and start walking slowly toward the fire, unsure where to look, but it’s a start.

Me: I’m by the fire now.

Ridge: I know.

I see Scar holding a drink in the air, waving at me. I’m not sure if she’s calling me over, but I wave back and keep on my path of finding Ridge.

Then suddenly, two hands plant on my waist from behind me. I spin around, coming face to face with Maddox.

“There you are.” He hands me another bottle of vodka, this one’s only three quarters full.

“Where do you hide all these?” I pat his jacket, jokingly. “Do you have an endless supply in there or something?”

“I have my ways.”

My phone pings and I steal a glance at it.

Ridge: Walk away from him.

I gulp. Unsure what to do. Maddox is being so sweet and I want more than anything to continue what we started earlier. But, Ridge is having an actual conversation with me for the first time. There’s a desperation inside me that wants to find him and finally talk with him face to face—if he’s able to do so.

Maddox bends his knees, getting eye level with me as I’m scouring the crowd. “You seem distracted.”

“Sorry,” I tell him. “I’m just looking for a friend of mine.”

“Riley,” Scar hollers over the music from the other side of the fire. “Come here, girl.” She’s holding up a drink and I use this as my out.

“And I’ve found her.”

“Oh, right. Scar, is it? Isn’t she your roommate?”

“Roommate and best friend.”

“Sweet. I’ll go with you. I don’t think I've met her or her boyfriend yet. Which one is it?”

“Boyfriends,” I correct him, “Crew, Jagger, and Neo.”

Maddox’s mouth draws back, and he nods. “Okay then. That’s pretty…cool.”

My phone pings again and I slide it halfway out of my pocket to read the message.

Ridge: Walk away from him now, Angel. Don’t test me.

My heart races, thoughts swirling. What do I do?

“Actually. Would you mind getting me a beer from the keg? I should probably take it easy tonight.”

“Yeah. Of course. I’ll meet you over with your friends.”

“Thanks, Maddox.”

Once he leaves, I breathe out a sigh of relief as I take my phone out.

As my finger taps hastily onto my phone, I can’t type fast enough.
