No words are spoken. No movements are made.

“Can we…help you?” I ask him, knowing damn well this one talks.

“No,” he deadpans. His eyes slide over to Maddox. “Where the fuck is Ridge?”

Lev has a way of making me feel two inches tall. Not only because he’s at least six-foot-four, but also because he exudes confidence along with a heavy dose of brashness. The thing is, I can tell this is one hundred percent Lev’s personality. It’s not some game to intimidate people.

Maddox drops the crust of his pizza on his paper plate. “He’s out working his assignment.”

I’ve heard of these assignments, but the girls here have no idea what they entail. Crew, Jagger, and Neo won't even speak about them to Scar, so that alone proves how confidential they are.

“Whereabouts?” Lev presses.

Maddox shrugs. “No clue. Call him.”

“Tried. He’s not picking up.”

“Weird,” Maddox says, reaching in his pocket and pulling out his phone. “That’s not like him.”

He taps into it, then sets it screen down on the table.

“Any word on that fucker that fell from this girl’s window?” He’s looking at me now, while asking Maddox the question. “Do they think she did it?”

My mouth opens, but Maddox speaks instead. “Riley didn’t do shit.”

“Riley didn’t do shit, huh? Then why are you and Ridge following her around like lost puppies? She had to have done something to catch your eye. What is it, a pussy made of gold?”

I scoff. “Screw you, asshole.”

Maddox’s phone vibrates against the table and he grabs it quickly. “Shit. It’s my dad.” He looks at Lev. “Can you play nice for a second? I’ve gotta take this. You okay, Riley?”

I nod, cutting Lev a glare. “I can handle him.”

Lev throws his hands up in surrender, but I can guarantee he’s not surrendering to shit. The minute Maddox walks away, he’s in my face.

“Screw me? Screw you, Trouble. If you think you’re gonna drag my friends down your dirty hole of unruliness, you’re sadly mistaken.”

Feeling tough, because I amTrouble, after all, I lean into his space. “I can’t drag someone who wants to follow,Lion.”

“It’ll do you good to remember that I am like a lion. Your goody-two-shoes attitude doesn’t fool me one bit.” Lev picks up the half-eaten pizza on my plate, chews off a bite, then tosses it back down before getting up.

Just when I think he’s gone, he leans over my shoulder, the scent of pepperoni on his breath. “When I say jump, you better fucking ask me how high, because I know what you’re capable of, and soon, everyone else will know it, too.”

I gulp, feeling like my heart has fallen into my stomach.

If that wasn’t a threat, I don’t know what one is. Lev thinks I killed Zeke and now, it sounds like he plans to use it against me.

I’m already on my feet, pacing back and forth in front of the table, when Maddox returns. I’m just grateful hedidreturn this time. Last call he took from his dad left me sitting at the coffee shop alone.

His eyes scan the student center. “Where’s Lev?”

“He left,” I say point-blankly.

Noticing how tense I am, Maddox stops my manic steps. “What did he say to you?”

I pinch my eyes closed, warding off the tears that threaten to fall, but it’s useless, they spill without fail. “Everyone thinks I killed Zeke.” I fall into Maddox’s arms. “I wouldn’t kill him, I swear.”

“I know you didn’t. And no one else thinks that either.”
