“I’ll deal with it. It’s my fault anyway,” I tell Tyler as I lean closer over the console to look out at Rubi with a raised brow. “Get in, Rubiana.”

She reluctantly stomps over and opens the passenger door and slides in, causing my hands to grip the steering wheel as her skirt slides higher up her thighs, teasing me. Her hand grips the seatbelt as she buckles herself in.

She wastes no time after sitting in the seat as she says, “Alright, say what you have to say quickly and take me to their house.”

I place the car in reverse, not caring that people are staring at us as I drive out of the parking lot and onto the street. A spur of the moment decision I made was that I decided to get her a new hoodie to replace the one that was ruined. She can send me the bill from the school store for a new school shirt. Either way, it’s a win-win. She gets a new hoodie and school shirt on me, and Tyler is off the hook with his dad, and I’ll feel better for not fucking my friend over because of what happened at lunch.

“Where are you going? Tyler’s house is that way.” She points her thumb with the arm full of tattoos in the opposite direction that we’re heading. Tattoos with history. Our history. Her favorite flower. The one I gave her first.

I glance at her briefly. “I’ll make you a deal. You keep your mouth shut about the hoodie and school shirt getting ruined, and I’ll buy you a new hoodie, and you can have the school send me the bill for the uniform shirt.”

She laughs.

It’s a beautiful laugh, but I keep a straight face, not giving away the fact that I find it sexy. Everything about her is sexy.

Yeah, I definitely have to get laid. I usually don’t go this long without having sex, but I haven’t hooked up with anyone recently because I have been busy with my father helping him with his business.

“What’s so funny?”

“I guess your boy doesn’t want to tell his daddy what an asshole he really is by spreading rumors about me and getting his friends to bully me on my first day. He can’t fight his own battles.” She scoffs. “I can’t believe you rich kids. You think blackmailing people because you have money is the answer for everything when you fuck up.”

My nostrils flare in annoyance as I pull in the parking lot of the upscale mall in West Lake and find a spot. I turn and face her, my eyes sliding over the polo shirt she’s wearing. I notice that her breasts are small but not too large. My eyes slide back up and I’m met with a knowing expression.Busted.

“Are you done ogling me?”

I snort. “Please, I have already established what I think of you…and attractive isn’t one of them.”

“Then you’re just a creep. Not only do you like to intimidate people, but you also like to bully, blackmail, and probably spread lies about them.”

“Don’t flatter yourself, and the last thing I am is a creep. I don’t need to blackmail you for shit. I think my offer is in your benefit. You get a free hoodie that was better than the homeless-looking one you were wearing earlier.”

She shakes her head and averts her eyes. “You are such an asshole. I’m trying to figure out how anyone puts up with you.”

“That’s because I’m not a liar, and I don’t need to pretend to be anything I’m not.”

She pulls her head back like I slapped her. I know I’m being a dick, but I can’t be nice to her. I hate her for what she did to me. People like her are the way they are because they refuse to be better. She thinks people should feel sorry for her. It doesn’t give her a free pass to show up and fuck someone else’s life up because her life was so shitty. She should be grateful her biological father took her in and that she will at least graduate from an elite high school.

I hear her hand fumbling with the door, and she manages to open it and slide out. Fuck. This is not how I planned for this to go. I lower the passenger-side window. “Get back in the car, Rubiana.”

She stomps off with her back turned as I watch her school skirt sway with each step, making me want to grab her and throw her over my shoulder like a caveman.

“No, I’d rather walk. I don’t want you to buy me anything. Like you said, I’ll just continue to be a piece of shit and steal one, right? Go fuck yourself, Ky. I hate you! Do yourself a favor and leave me the fuck alone.”

Rubi

I FINALLY MAKEit to the house and am hot and sweaty. I am also in need of a shower, and have to thank whoever created locks for the front doors that require punching in the code. It is the first time I have used one, and I have to say, my sperm donor must make good money to afford a nice home like this.

When I shut the front door, I’m greeted with a Hawaiian-scented candle that is burning somewhere in the house. It beats the meth and cigarette smell I’m used to from when I was younger, or the old mildewy smell from the houses I was placed in foster care.

The gray wood floors are a big contrast to my dirty, worn-out Converse sneakers. The white walls complementing the gray and white carpet and nude-colored furnishings. I make my way past the foyer and up the stairs to a room, the likes of which I have only seen in a magazine, but not before I’m interrupted.

“Hi, Rubiana. I thought Tyler was bringing you home?” Caroline says in a soft voice.

I turn, facing her with my hand on the white wood railing of the staircase. She furrows her brows when she notices the polo shirt that is similar to her sons. If my day couldn’t get any worse, Stephen Murray steps up behind her, looking at me over her head with a hard expression in his eyes.

“Where were you? And why do you have a boy’s school shirt on? I was clear about the rules.”

I shake my head at him and turn away—he thinks I was with a boy—and begin to climb the stairs. I don’t need this shit. “Why don’t you ask your son? And hello to you, too, Mrs. Murray.”
