Ky laughs through his nose and leans close, his lips inches from my cheek, but he is looking at Conner when he says, “I lied.” He angles his head and I feel his eyes trailing down my face. My hands are frozen in place not wanting to move.

“Dude, what the fuck is wrong with you? One minute you–”

“How much do you like football, Conner? Ky interrupts him.

“It’s my life, but you already know that.”

“Hmm.” He sucks his teeth and leans close to whisper in my ear. “Drink your chocolate milk before it gets hot, baby. Eat.” He then leans back slightly and his eyes flick to Conner, all calm and collected. “You didn’t answer my question, Conner?”

“Yes, she is pretty.” Conner replies in a hard tone.

“Since football is your life and it is all you care about. I suggest you get the fuck up and leave Rubiana alone. This is your second warning…there won’t be a third,” Ky tells him. “You wouldn’t want to be forced to find something else to do with your life once you graduate or… you might not get to graduate.”

Conner suddenly gets up and he shakes his head. “You have fucking lost your mind, Ky. You need help.”

Ky laughs manically. “Yeah, well, at least I don’t force myself on girls.”

I look up and Conner’s eyes narrow, and I think Ky struck a nerve. A nerve that hits close to home. I believe Ky for some reason, but I also know that Ky is acting strange.

“Says the one who fucks the entire cheerleading and dance team. I don’t force myself on girls.”

“Yeah, keep telling yourself that,” Ky deadpans.

“What are you doing, Ky?” Tyler asks as he walks up behind me.

Ky moves to get up from the table, but before he stands, he whispers, “My time is up, preciosa. I’ll catch you later.” He stands and taps Tyler’s shoulder. “I’m just making sure Conner was behaving…we wouldn’t want Noah to take his QB spot, now, would we?”

“I told you to leave her alone, Ky,” Tyler warns, but Ky walks out of the cafeteria without a backward glance.

He didn’t even eat. He didn’t sit at the table with the cheerleaders and jocks, and now I’m confused.

“Stay away from him, Rubi.”

I look up at Tyler, not trusting his motives now. I’m not sure if his kindness is all an act. “Why? Why are you so worried about Ky?”

“I can’t talk to you about it here. Maybe some other time, but trust me. Stay away from him. He likes to play games. The kind where you always lose.”

Ky

I WALK INSIDEmy house after school, hating the fact that Tyler is busting my balls about Rubiana. After the incident at the pool party, he is on a mission to keep me from talking to her. I couldn’t stand that Rubiana was forced to smell rotten eggs because of me when she took out her textbook. I was behind most of the pranks and offensive name calling, but that was before. Before I knew the real reason she left me.

Tyler has no idea I was the boy she talked about. The one she would sneak off to see and pay for in abuse when she would get home. I was so blind and stupid. She must think I’m the biggest piece of shit, but I have to change that. Her thinking like that about me just won’t do.

My father is sitting alone in the living room nursing a glass of whisky in his hand. When he sees me approach, he places the tumbler on the glass table in the center. “Good, you’re home. I have something to discuss with you.”

My father waiting for me to get home can only mean one thing, someone has called him to complain about his only son’s anger issues. My instability.

“Yes, sir,” I answer politely, taking a seat.

I respect my father…he has always been there for me. But I know that the only time he wants to have a talk is when he is covering up for me, or wants me to follow the rules or to cover up for me and tells me how he is going to do it. I can thank my father for the few things he made sure to give me besides money and the ability to fuck girls whenever I want. He made sure when kids in seventh grade began bullying me and I came home with a black eye and a note from the principal about how sorry she was for me getting hurt, he said I needed to stop being a pussy and defend myself.

“Stephen Murray called me about your behavior. He says he wants you to stay away from his daughter. She’s troubled.”

Annoyance flickers through me, but I shrug my shoulders and lean back in my seat. “And?”

My father smiles and with eyes just like mine that gleam with awareness he is telling me that he knows. He made the connection. He knew I was playing with a little girl in the yard behind the house, but he didn’t think she was a threat since I never brought her inside the house. I knew not to because I didn’t want my father to stop her from visiting me. My father is not only a businessman with part ownership of an architecture firm. He wants me to take over his architect firm after I graduate and work there for a couple of years.A firm that Tyler and Christian’s father all work for. The three of them are partners, and it’s also how I met the guys. Eventually the three of us will take over. It was all planned since middle school, all of us following in our fathers’ footsteps. My father also has other businesses, mainly drugs he funnels to Georgia from Florida.

It was then that I kind of understood why my mother left him, but there were other reasons. Apparently, I have other issues that were diagnosed when I was kid, and it got worse after Rubi left.
