I grab the beers and kick the refrigerator closed with more force than necessary, hearing the rattling of the things inside.

“What the fuck crawled up your ass and died?”

I look up, and Reid is staring straight at me. I wonder how long he has been standing there. He must have checked the cameras and seen that Gia and Jess had arrived.

“Nothing.”

He walks closer and leans on the marble island, placing his elbows on the surface. “What did you tell her? What did you do?”

He isn’t stupid; he’s actually quite astute. Genius even. He goes to school and runs his businesses and hotel from his computer in his room.

“Nothing. I said something stupid. I’m probably in the doghouse like you.”

Reid chuckles. “You know that is impossible. You know that, right?”

I grab the bottle opener and slam the drawer shut. Lifting the bottle caps off each brown bottle, and when I’m done, I look up and watch him give me a smirk. “Did you tell her who you must marry when the time comes?

“Why, so she can avoid me like she does you?”

“You think she is avoiding me?” he challenges.

“I know for a fact that she is, and I also know that you are too chicken shit to tell her the truth. You don’t want to admit you like her, and it’s not just to fuck.”

He chuckles and places his hand under his chin with a predatory smile. “What did you say, asshole?”

I know a threat from him when I see one. If I hurt her, he will kill me. Not literally, but he will make me pay in the worst way. I sigh because Reid isn’t my enemy. We’re like brothers––more than that. We trust each other with everything.

“I told her that we invited her here because she is Gia’s friend, that also happens to be Dravin’s fiancée. I made it seem like that was the only reason.”

He scratches his ear, twirling his piercing between his fingers, lost in thought. His gaze finds mine after I toss the bottle caps in the trash with a resounding clink.

“What did she say?”

“She wouldn’t look at me after that and just said, “Lucky me.”

“Hmm. Yep. You’re fucked.”

“Fuck you,” I snap, glaring at him.

He raises his hand in surrender. “I’m not your guy, but I’m just pointing out the fact that you fucked up with her and when she finds out you are also to marry and who the bitch is…good luck with that.”

“What do you suggest I do?”

He grabs two beers and says, “I think you should tell her. You know Gia is going to invite her. She’s going to find out at the ball anyway. It should come from you rather than how she found out about me.”

“Who is taking her?” I ask.

I can’t. He can’t. Not in front of the members of the Order. She will become their newest target of interest. We have had enough with Warren, and he will obviously be there like the snake he is.

“No one.”

I grab the rest of the bottles and grit my teeth, thinking about her dancing with another man that isn’t Reid or me. “Dude, I can’t sit and watch her dance with someone else.”

“Then…we will. We can’t show up with her, but we can dance with her. There is no rule against dancing with Prey.”

Yeah, I don’t think she will want to dance with me after I tell her my fate when I graduate. I don’t think she will ever look at me the same way. The big secret I have kept from her. The secret that will unravel every moment I have had with her, evaporating it into thin air.
