“How’s class. Did you get an A?” I ask. “Do you need me to go in there?”

She giggles. “I did and no, I’m okay.”

No, you’re not, baby. You haven’t been okay, but I don’t tell her that.

“Good.”

“Where’s my kiss?” Valen asks with a grin on his face when he comes up next to us.

Jess gives him a pointed look, not knowing how to answer. I tighten my hold on her waist and drag her toward me.

“I’m afraid you’ll need to find another girl to ask because this one is taken.”

I make it a point to say it loud enough for the asshole in her class to hear. His eyes narrow, and I could have sworn he curled his lip in a snarl, but I don’t break my stare. I hold it, aimed directly at my intended target.Touch her again and die, asshole. Your days are numbered.

“Taking charge, Riordan. I like it.”

People in the hallway begin to do their business, but Mich keeps looking at the words sprawled across the wall. He stills and stares at it for another minute.

When Jess heads back inside the class, I walk up behind him, wishing I could snap his neck. Not yet. But in time.

“Are you?”

He turns. “What? Was this you?

His blond hair is glued to his head like a helmet with so much gel I’m surprised he even has hair to begin with.

“Does it look like it was me?”

“The way you asked. It seemed like…”

“It couldn’t have been. I was in the bathroom, and I don’t remember seeing it there when I walked past. I was just wondering if you were insane?”

“No, why would you think that?”

I smile at him like a Cheshire cat. “There are three types of people. Mad, crazy, and insane. Which one are you?”

“None, but if I had to choose, I would choose crazy.”

“For some, that isn’t enough, and for others, they didn’t choose wisely,” I reply, nudging my head to the door. “Get back to class; you never know if there is an insane person on the loose fucking around.”

I turn around and wait out of sight until he enters the classroom, while I patiently wait for my girl.

CHAPTER38

Jesse

“Jesse?” My mother comes outside the bar. I was waiting until her shift was over so I could surprise her this weekend.

Reid convinced me to allow him to drive me over. I couldn’t pass up the hours I would be able to spend with him so I agreed. He offered to fly us but I refused. He had already offered to have a driver take me anywhere I wished to go since my car wouldn’t start. To be honest, though, I preferred to spend the six hours it took us to get here just the two of us.

We stopped to fill up and get snacks: potato chips. I told him which ones I was sick of and couldn’t stop eating if I tried. For me, it was regular Doritos, and he likes anything barbecue.

Gia told me what happened to Warren and how he died, but we all know the truth. I have to give it to Dravin and his brother. The way they made it look was brilliant. No questions. No deep investigations. And no one questions anything, not even his parents.

“It’s me, Momma. I’m here.”

I’m embarrassed that I don’t have money to stay at a hotel in town, but my mom always keeps the trailer clean as best she can inside. On the outside, it looks like a bunch of alley cats raided it, but it’s home, and she makes me feel loved no matter what. Amanda Sharpe is a saint.
